how long would those tunnels have been ?

10 miles at least

It is around 10 miles from Asfordby to Belvoir.

I thought the coal was under Asfordby not belvoir castle itself
It was the who!e area. Approx 500,000,000 tonnes.

No idea. It could have been green with yellow spots for all I know about coal.

Ashfordby was a mixture of coal and lignite, perfect for power stations and clean to.

coal can be ground to dust and injected under pressure into burn in a furnace/boiler creating less emissions or liquidised but it is still coal...

our pit had a seam called The Ryder than would burn all day, so despite having 10/12 cwt a month allowance of any old coal we would wrap a lump up and smuggle it home in a snap bag

it left little ash and made little smoke
