Post subject:  The word 'Taxi' on unlicensed vehicle.

The following has been posted on another forum to which I belong:

I'm looking at a wheelchair accessible vehicle, a few vehicles that I'm interested in have Taxi signs on the front/rear.

Are there any regulations on displaying a taxi sign on a personal vehicle?

Thanks

Is anyone aware of any case law that prohibits or permits the word 'Taxi' to be displayed on a vehicle that is not licensed as a hackney carriage?

And presumably you mean not licensed as a private hire vehicle either?

Suspect wouldn't be a problem on a non-trade vehicle, unless the driver was in a scenario where they could be considered to be plying for hire, in which case the word 'taxi' on the vehicle would constitute evidence in that regard.

But I'm not sure if there's any specific prohibition on displaying the word taxi if the vehicle isn't used for commercial purposes.

Could be completely wrong, of course 8-[

It's statute law.

That only seems to apply to vehicles used for hire and reward, though.

It's not clear from the question whether or not that's the case here, but I'm guessing the reference to a 'personal vehicle' means that it isn't something used commercially, and maybe just the family car that has to be a WAV, or similar.

Good point.

I suppose, to answer the OPs question, then it would all depend on the circumstances at the time.

If the 'taxi' is being used for personal stuff, then it would be ok. If it was used for commercial stuff then maybe not.

Might be best to black the 'taxi' words off.
