But looking at their published data, the numbers do look bad.

bear in mind that those are mathematical models based on a "best guess" as to the virus behaviour

Indeed.

But we are now, it appears, following the South Korea/Taiwan way of dealing with it, and they are nearing the end of their peaks.

Basically I think the gov aren't that bothered how long this goes on for, providing we have adequate ventilators to help those that need it.

So far this week I’m down 50% on what I usually take. My best job would have been my last one, a £30-£35 job to Flint (taking me in the right direction for home!) only problem was he was a Pikey, sorry, traveller, and wouldn’t pay me upfront #-o

well don't think any of my drivers got above £40 today

Now having to consider what we can do some are asking for the drivers to agree to work alternate days to enable those left to earn more on a day because it is depressing and boring queueing for the rank with 30 or 40 other taxis when work off the rank is negligible and phone work is much reduced

Personally i think that will bring the overall level of trade down further as we will effectively be shutting the rank work out and leaving the competition to scoop up our regulars from the rank

Maybe if drivers will agree to say half staying on rank till they get a job and then trying to make it up on phone while the others stay on the rank

Maybe, maybe not.

The schools closure doesn't apply to, according to the DfE,

Examples of these workers include NHS staff, police and supermarket delivery drivers who need to be able to go to work to support the country’s fight to tackle coronavirus. Vulnerable children include those who have a social worker and those with Education, Health and Care Plans – a legal document that describes a child’s special educational needs and the support they require.

Quite sure a significant number of taxi/PH school runs apply to the latter.

One of the students that we transport has SEN but his school closed today.

Then some of the teachers need to get back to work.

Surely the Director of Education at the council needs to do what the government is saying he/she must.

Boris wasn't giving an option, he was giving an instruction.

two of our schools were telling people on Monday they were closing on Thursday after finish another closed last night so that leaves only 3 left to declare so to speak

There are very few NHS hospital staff live in the town although we have a large elderly population served by home carers so not sure what if any provision is being made perhaps 1 primary and a limited service at the secondary school but most secondary school children locally commute to school in other towns

If councils honour their school contracts even at half rate a lot of us who do them should be fine.

If not I think i could survive until september without that funding, theres very little general PH work this week so that cant be counted on.

if that fails it'll be dipping into savings or pension funds...or sell up, settle up and keep whats little might be left.

That would be the equivalent to being subsidised when those who do not have a school contract are not, clearly a breach of equality act.

say what  either you choose to do school contracts or you don't that's not inequality it is helping keep the contractor in business I don't do school contracts by choice but for those getting the 50 percent I don't feel jealous I think quite right too

I do a run to a college,if I get paid for not doing the run I think it is only correct that all licensed proprietors are giving the same subsidy to keep them financially stable at this troubled time for our trade whether hackney carriage or private hire.
Any money paid for not providing the service is a subsidy underwritten by the ratepayer.
