You see. The full extended use of social media and the era we live in makes us a prime target for.

Paranoia
Mass panic
Fake news.
Photoshop generated panic and conspiracy theories.

We are in a dangerous era with the digital age.

If this was the early 90s or earlier then the full extent of what is going on would only be available to us through tv radio and newspaper articles.

There is part of me that wants to get this bloody bug, have a week or so sweating and aching and then get back to some sort of personal normality.

I suppose it depends on how we think it would affect us personally, all the way from not being aware at all/barely noticing it, to ending up on a ventilator, or even worse

Of course there are predictors (like old-age, asthma, smoking or a compromised immune system), but there's a lot of stuff out there about relatively young and fit people ending up in ICU or in a coffin :-|

But I'm still relatively unworried about getting it, or maybe it's because the financial implications seem more obvious and immediate

Anyway, interesting study that's apparently been reported in the FT, and suggests half of us may have already been infected :-o

Alastair Benn of Reaction comment site wrote:
Is the UK close to developing herd immunity? That's the potential conclusion of an exciting study by a group of Oxford academics. The term herd immunity has been widely misused and condemned in the last few weeks, but if large numbers of Britons have developed Coronavirus and suffered very few symptoms it could - could - suggest that the death rates in the more apocalyptic modelling published last week might not come to pass.

The latest modelling produced by the group of Oxford academics indicates that the Coronavirus may already have infected as many as half of the UK population.

The Oxford’s Evolutionary Ecology of Infectious Disease group uses a “susceptibility-infected-recovered model”. Published today, it takes into account initial underreporting and the vulnerability of the general population to hospitalisation from respiratory illness.

The study assumed that the disease has been circulating freely since the beginning of February. Infection would then have spread through the UK population in an uncontrolled way.

The first deaths from the virus were reported at the beginning of March. The picture we are seeing in terms of death rates may reflect the rapid progress of the disease through the population in that period.

Sunetra Gupta, professor of theoretical epidemiology, who led the study, sounded a note of caution, however. The findings can only be corroborated through “large-scale serological surveys — antibody testing.”

Nonetheless, the initial conclusions are in marked contrast to the models produced by Imperial College, London which estimated that as many as half a million people could die of the disease in the UK if it circulated with no controls.

The Imperial study is credited with changing the UK government’s approach to much stricter restrictions on social mixing.

Gupta is quoted in the FT criticising the study: “I am surprised that there has been such unqualified acceptance of the Imperial model.”

But she supports the government’s strict measures to prevent the number of cases expanding over the next month beyond the capacity of the NHS.

Some mush on whatsapp is banging on about all these deaths/illnesses being a direct result of 5G telecommunications. #-o

Well let's hope that study comes to be an accurate assessment, but I have my doubts.

One only has to look at what actually is happening in Italy, Iran and Spain to see the chances of the UK getting off lightly are, at best, slim.

That said the 500,000 deaths was a scare story by some of the boffins IMO.

That figure was based on us doing nothing and the NHS getting swamped and unable to provide care

what is frightening though is that only about 150 people in the uk have recovered but 450 died that's 3 out of 4 getting the serious version

Eh?

Roughly speaking, 8,000 confirmed cases in the UK, and 400 deaths.

That's a death rate of around 5%, or 1 in 20.

And real death rate probably just a fraction of that, because many people probably infected without being aware, and I think if you have mild symptons you just self-isolate unless it becomes serious, and you're not even required to contact the NHS, so you won't be included in confirmed cases.

Of course, a lot more people are going to die, but you seem to be suggesting that if you're infected then three out of four people will die.

No.

One of the points Hitchin alluded to in the article SW posted on this thread, was echoed, sort of, by the fella who is in charge of the modeling favoured by the government.

Up to two thirds of people who die from coronavirus in the next nine months are likely to have died this year from other causes, a government advisor has said.

Professor Neil Ferguson, who is recovering at home from Covid-19, told the Science and Technology Committee that experts were now expecting around 20,000 deaths, although said it may turn out to be a lot less.

But he said that many of those deaths were likely to be old and seriously ill people who would have died from other conditions before the end of the year.

You can watch the full Select Committee here, with the Professor on from 6 minutes until about 46 minutes.

had to laugh one of my drivers decided to self isolate with his family quite early on

spoke to him today and his wife has all the symptoms (but not serious)

that said the first local case has been reported but he caught it in Peterborough hospital where 3 have died so far.

And which bit of this missive did you have to laugh at?

Funny that people have died, was it?

Jesus wept.
