Depends on your circumstances, though. If I was earning £30k ordinarily then, yes, I'd be cock-a-hoop to get a couple of grand a month not to work. Even though I've got rent to pay, while some drivers will be living rent- or mortgage-free.

But unfortunately my circumstances aren't quite like that, and the grant has been 70% or zero for a lot of the time as well, and trade's been largely wiped out for a year here now.

So how much was your insurance, badge and plate, MoT and repairs and maintenance for the year, roughly?

And no car repayments and interest, presumably? (In that regard I'm lucky as well, but plenty others aren't.)

To be clear, the near-£700 I paid for my badge and plate in the autumn does cover three years, but I still had to find the cash

PH ops is £250 for a 5 year licence (£50/year) badge is £170 for 3 years

A local 1 man car owner but registered as a ltd company for 11 years dissolved his ltd company in january 2020 and went to sole trader

Ok, we've now established what *you* would do, but your original point was about what others would do, whose circumstances you don't know.

And if you did 20,000 miles during lockdown year, seems a bit odd that you're telling everyone that you'd gladly park up while just receiving the SEISS grant?

And you haven't addressed the point about the 70% and 0% periods.

Add in depreciation, and even on an older car that would take total fixed costs to between £2-3,000 without turning a wheel. And a lot more than that for a newer, more expensive car. And even the interest on a loan for a decent motor could come to a four-figure sum in a year.

Over the last twelve months, there is no doubt that collectively huge sums of money in the form of loans and grants has been thrown at the taxi industry and others. For some it would appear to be not enough, whilst others have been grateful for the support they have received, and others have had no help at all. Sounds a bit like this little piggy went to market...
Where the schiesen will hit the fan though, is the next twelve months, or 24 months, or 36 months, where income levels remain low, as they will, and the government largesse dries up. If you are wholly dependent on handouts to survive, you are facing a rocky road ahead.
I cannot see any return to normal ( whatever that is) any time soon. Do you?

It depends on what your primary market is.

If it's corporate or airports, then it will be a struggle. But if normal run of the mill taxi/PH work then I think things will get better.

If folks can't, or won't, go abroad then the local travel markets will boom, and home grown tourists will be flooding the seasides and other places of interest.
