The full text of the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill which is scheduled to pass through Parliament this year can be read at the following link. With any luck this bill will enable the Minister to swiftly bring certain sections of taxi legislation up to 21 first century standards.

Like I stated afew weeks ago on TDO, there are contributors to this site who applaud this particularly appalling piece of legislation, which can be used to bypass the democratic process. With it, government can railroad through anything they want. The end of democracy in Britain. The 21st Century standard in Iran, maybe, JD?

There is a consultation process attached to the legislation but as you imply it may give rise for concern in certain quarters? However, if it fast tracks some of the more outdated and eroneous legislation which works against those in the industry then in that respect it will be a good thing. There is more to Taxi legislation than section 16.

And there was me thinking we had general elections every 5 years.

Laws are in-acted, but they can also be repealed.

Anyway, it seems that the Govt has recently curtailed the powers outlined in the Bill somewhat to focus it more on cutting red tape rather than the broader powers which were deemed a tad authoritarian.

As an avid Torygraph reader I'm surprised you missed that one Jimbo, or perhaps ommitting to mention this volte face suits your agenda?

The devil is no doubt in the detail but I would rather see a swift end to dysfunctional legislation rather than the courts having to rectify the situation every time an eroneous, unworkable outdated piece of legislation comes before them.

If you think Bliar should be given even greater powers to start illegal wars, to detain people without trial, et al, than applaud the RRO. Do I have a vested interest? Yes I do, but it's not what you may think. I became a Grandfather for the first time, but my son is out in Iraq clearing up the Bush/Bliar mess. This bill sucks, and should be consigned to the dustbin, along with the sleazeast government ever.

I have been following the progress of this bill and for those interested it is now having its second reading in the House of Lords. The bill is on course to becoming law by the end of the year. Anyone wishing to read the notes of the bill can do so here....
