Street Car

Fri - Sat nightshift (£75 a shift) start 6.00pm – 6.00am.
£75.00
£75.00 +
£70 fuel
£220.00

Two hundred and twenty pounds before you make a bolt for yourself. This is what the owner of a street car wanted for two shifts at the weekend.

Added to that he wanted a driver for Sunday to Thursday night-shift - Monday to Friday day-shift – Saturday and Sunday day-shift.

Even at £30 for each remaining shift that’s £510 a week and probably more like £600 knowing this guy.

BTW he just bought the plate for over £40,000.

I sincerely hope this [edited by admin] never gets the opportunity to pay it off. :wink:

i have a mate who drives black cabs (yes we still talk :lol: :lol: )
he has told me that if you want a one of shift on a fri/sat it works out at around the £60-£65 mark(depends on the taxi baron i think!!!!)
where his regular rental works out at around the £45 mark so there are a few who just take the P1ss.

mind you we have some PH rentals that do a 50/50 split for a fri or sat shift others charge a set amount.

A guy I know works for ComCab pays the plate holder £300 for 7 nights and needless to say only works 6 nights.

Rental £300
Fuel £150
Total £450

Now it doesn’t matter how you want to cut it this guy has to clear £900 a week to be on half the clock.

Hours 6*12 h= 72 hours

Average working week 36-38 hours.

Now divide £900 into 72 hours less 25% for tax.

Is this a f******g dream world were living in?

This is 72 hours night-shift in the saddle.

Now work the same hours day-shift as a parking attendant for the minimum wage i.e. £4.50 and hour.

What a f*****g joke :roll:

Just for you Jackcab it actually works out you get a higher hourly rate delivering Pizza but not 72 hours a week to do it in. That is to say if you delivered pizza's for 72 hours you would be making more money. :wink:

Darren63 you are missing yourself. The bold taxi drivers up here think they have hit the jackpot if they can work 72-84 hours a week for a £300 rental.

I don't think they have the grey matter to realise a 72 hour night-shift is just a tad excessive. If you actually work it out you are doing two weeks in one to hit the magic number "£900" just to give yourself half the clock £450.00.

That's a staggering £6.25 an hour for constant night-shift two weeks off a year with no holiday pay, sick-pay or pension.


The wee lassies who work in in Tescos get a higher rate with at least 6 weeks holiday-pay, sick-pay, pension fund and share options not forgetting 10-15% off their shopping.

Yeah being a self-employed taxi driver in Edinburgh is brilliant :roll: if you don't want a life.

How much is it to rent a radio on a ph circuit in edinburgh? Assuming that you are supplying your own licensed car/fuel/insurance. Just being curious.

around the £120-£130 mark just depends on the company and there is the cut of the contract work as well

On average how much would you expect to pull in paying £120-130 radio dues working six nights 12 hour shifts with your own vehicle?

Or is it worse than £6.25 an hour over a 72 hour week taking into consideration your Phc doubles as your private car?

The guy I've used as an example is on the edge. The poor bas**** has a wife, young kids, a mortgage, loans to the bank and credit cards.

This guy is shi**** himself as to the availability of drives and what he pays for a rental. If he end's up out of a job or loses any more money keeping himself in employment it's game over.

How bad is it driving a Ph if he puts his car on and joins a circuit?

Radio rent in the Borders £80 per week using your own cab, contracts paid monthly and a long wait between jobs.
Its better to work on your own here like I do
operators licence includes test and crb £169, Plates £25 deposit, drivers licence includes crb £69.
Average take per week £800
You could clear £400 just by coming out at midnight to 4am 3 nights a week and working off the rank only.
I used to work all hours but have cut back to a 4 day week

So presumably he doesn't intend driving the taxi himself?

I suspect he'll find it difficult to get all these shifts covered, particularly in a street car.

This is one cheeky barsteward. Apparently he already has a taxi in CRT which he shares with his partner although this is his own private venture. He only bought the plate because of the availability of driver’s and is looking to pay it off at breakneck speed to avoid the risk of losing the plate value. Word is the bold I.T.S. (Cabtivate) assured him there would be no increase in plates for the foreseeable future. As for covering the shifts he just might pull it off, the way thing’s are going guys are getting desperate to stay in work and that means taking what's available. :-|

That’s not bad cash considering your overheads are as little as what they are. Up here they are totally delusional all of them are millionaires living in denial as to how sh** the job is. No one wants to admit it’s just a total pi** take but defend the system they will. Try telling them anything like the truth they just go weak at the knees and stick their heads back in the sand to prop themselves up. I don’t think it will be long before denial becomes realisation and acceptance of where they are. The Edinburgh Taxi Trade (If that is what you can call it) is solely surviving on the ignorance of the driver’s and where they are in the food chain, £300 rentals for what exactly, not a life that’s for sure. :-|
