Would have just told the customer to get out and got rid of him as quickly as possible.

This is one of many reasons why I left the trade.

Yes. It's only 50p and I never have or never would deal with a situation as that driver has done.

But the passenger is showing disrespect for the profession as most do as this type of situation is not a once a year scenario.

My experience found this to be more frequent than desirable.

Yet how many of those same people eat a meal in a restaurant and say to the waiter when the bill arrives that they don't have enough cash and left their bank card at home etc?

How many fuel their car at a petrol station and say to the employee I have only got £20 to pay for my £20.50 worth of fuel?

And so on.

The fares are already cheap generally in this country and they still take the biscuit don't they?

Customers along with the councils are making it hard and drivers are fighting a losing battle at the moment.

Wait until more leave the trade and see how they feel when that £20.50 fare turns into £30 or they have to put up with severe delays for their cab to arrive.

The public don't deserve the service sometimes.

For a start, in the normal course of events I would simply ask for the £20 if the meter clocked £20.50. I'd just be glad to get a £20 run (and, around here, it would be mostly on fastish A-roads or uncrowded B-roads, so wouldn't take long, and would seem like an easy £20).

Only time I would stand my ground on this kind of thing would be if the punter was a pain and just assumed that you would round it down, and was maybe being a bit aggressive about it.

But I think it would have to be a lower metered sum, and a higher sum that the customer expected me to forgo before I'd make a real fuss about it.

50p from a £20.50 fare isn't a hill I'd be willing to die on. Even if the punters were a total pain, I'd prefer to get them out of the car ASAP.

I wouldn't have engaged with him, and certainly wouldn't have locked him in.

But I would have got him blocked from the firm and he would never set foot in another Sussex mobile.

The punter wanted to make a big thing about it, whereas he could have just put the 50p on a card, or offered to give it to him the next time he picked him up.

I suspect there is more to this and maybe the punter is known for taking the pi**.

I'd have taken the £20.....no point making a mountain out of a mole hill over that kind of money, the time wasted in argument would have been of more value.

But had I see the guy standing in the p1ssing wet rain weeks later looking for a lift i'd have smiled at him and drove on by.

Years ago whilst working above Porthmadog i picked up 3 girls and the brother of 1 jumped in, took em home, he was last out, owed £1.50 - he jumped out laughing and ran in home..... :lol: yeah, funny...


2 weeks later he tried to get in the car again, sat in the rear, i said he wasnt invited and made him get out, his sister agreed, midnight in a wet cold Welsh village 8 miles from home with no taxis in the village...........

he wasnt laughing as i watched inmy rear view mirror... his sister said "hes a C***"
