Doesn't sound that unusual, and by no means confined to rank work.
Often these types are just on the wind up, or have unrealistic expectations with regard to drivers' knowledge.
Like they're going to an obscure farm address in the middle of nowhere, and you say you're not sure where it is, and they say they're going there all the time, and they've never had a driver before who doesn't know where it is. Aye, right
Then there are those who, when you're 90% of the way there, and haven't said anything, suddenly start giving directions. Lucky guess that I got 90% of the way there without asking, even though I don't have a clue, eh?
Or you ask what you think is a sensible question when they get in - like which end of the specified street they're at - and they suddenly assume it's your first day on the job and you've never been to their street before, and you barely know your way out of the street the rank is on

But it's never clear if they're genuine, or just taking the pi$$
