The 20th anniversary of bus deregulation is being celebrated with gridlock in Manchester.

Last week local firm UK North put 12 buses per hour on one route, to compete with Stagecoach's frequent services.

So many buses waited in the Piccadilly area that surrounding streets were jammed, trams cancelled and attendants told to slap parking tickets on loitering buses. As the law stands, UK North and Stagecoach have every right to bring Manchester to a halt, as long as they give 8 weeks notice.

This is nothing new in Manchester the reason for congestion is the fact that buses are not policed by the authorities. If they were made to keep to timetables and stopped from plying for hire at bus stops, there would be none of this.

Buses acting like Taxis is what we have here and I'm sure this scenario is echoed in many other Cities throughout the UK.

As the law stands, UK North and Stagecoach have every right to bring Manchester to a halt, as long as they give 8 weeks notice. Meanwhile hundreds of communities across Britain cry out for more buses, which wouldnt make big enough profits for bus firms. All of this is fine by labour, which has spent nine years refusing to ammend Mrs Thatcher's ill conceived deregulation.

You guy's should come to london, 50% of traffic jam's caused by bus's. Oxford street is blocked all bloody day, as are most main road's in london. I reckon there must be 20 different routes run down oxford street, why not just have one route going up and down main roads, with smaller bus's covering the side street's. Everywhere you go in london now there are new bus routes, which in turn cause massive traffic problem's. It's all part of ken's plan to get car's out of london, bloody leftie!

Well thats another topic altogether. Suffice to say there are many similarities between them and the Minicab trade.
