This e-mail has been sent by the ICT Service Desk on behalf of and with the authority of John Strange, Deputy Director Security

The Trading Standards Office have brought the following scam to our attention:
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number as this is a mail scam originating from Belize .

If you call this number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call.

If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 0207 239 6655 or ICTIS (the premium rate service regulator) at http://www.icstis.org.uk or your local trading standards office.

This is a genuine scam.
This service is under investigation by ICSTIS. Please be aware of this scam and forward this information to as many as possible.

there was a similar one going around a few years ago, where they whould ring you up asking for a written quote to be faxed over. again a 09* number.

I wonder if the scammers could attack the call-back facility?

If they rang from a £100 a minute number which wouldn't cost them to ring out, but if they answered the call-back and left the phone line open, wouldn't that cost the operator's bundles?

The annoying thing about this and other scams is that the police and trading standards seem powerless to stop them. The law is wrong in my eyes for allowing scams like this to continue. I mean, what's the flippin point of contacting the police to tell them what they already know.

They claim that because the small print explains it's a con, the company running the scam hasn't exactly broken any law and as such they can't take action other than to warn people.

There used to be a bogus company that sent letters out claiming that despite previous requests you hadn't responded and unless you sent £95 pounds within the next seven days to the Data Collection Agency, you may be fined upto £2000. People understandably believed this to be the Data Protection Agency but the worst thing was, there was no telephone number given, just and address round the corner from our offices.

For over two years, directory enquiries told people that we were the only company in the area with the word data in the name, so we had irate people on the phone every other day. In the two years that it took to close this scam down, the bloke running it made over two million pounds.
