As you may be aware, the Government has rejected the majority of the Office of Fair Trading recommendations for the taxi trade. Local authorities will retain control of taxi numbers and quality control of vehicles. T&G (Transport and General Workers' Union) cab section activists put forward a well-argued case against plans to de-regulate the industry.
We are pleased with the result of our campaign and now look forward to discussing a managed growth policy with Mansfield District Council. Managed growth is where the council issues the correct amount of Hackney vehicle licences to meet, if any, unmet demand.
Surveys should take account of a 24-hour, seven-day week, not just peak demand on weekend evenings. Managed growth is now used in Manchester, Liverpool, Southend and Edinburgh. We see no reason why it should not work in Mansfield.
