 Post subject: Testing of Diesels.

After 12 years of using petrol cars, I recently treated myself to a fastidiously maintained Mercedes E 300 Turbodiesel. Imagine my horror when I took the car for test at the council depot and the two grinning idiots took it out of my hands and proceeded to rev the engine ferociously for long periods keeping the throttle to the floor until the noise was unbearable. Apparently this behaviour is warranted by the need to have the engine oil warm on diesels in order to carry out emissions checks. I think these morons were going totally over the top. I cannot comprehend how the need to rev an engine into the redline relates to any quantifiable aspect of the test whether it be a Dept of Transport or Local Authority requirement. Am I being paranoid or can these people abuse our property by virtue of their position? :evil:

Are you in Halifax?

they do this on my fleet too

in fact they do it and 4 out of 5 times my taxis break down within a week of the test.

ensure it is warm when you take it to Battison Road. ensure the cam belt is ok

and pull your face when its done I cant help it!

I always have to disappear when this happens. :(

There surely has to be a better way to check emmissions. :shock:

Same up North,but you have to sign disclaimer form,no signature,no plate?

I am trying to obtain information from Dept of Transport and also from independent M.O.T sources as to the criteria demanded. I always thought that there were strict guidelines laid down for testing, i.e. is there a specific requirement for prolonged maximum revving of the engine and is a reading taken ? Who knows? All I know is that during normal driving at 70 mph my engine is doing less than 2500 rpm. The rev counter goes into redline at 5000 rpm up to 6000rpm which is obviously deemed by the manufacturer to be dangerous. :evil: P.S. No I am not in Halifax Geoff but in a town where locals murdered the Bishop of Durham in the 11th century. :roll: :roll: :roll:

Goodness Gracious !!!! I see pedantry still abounds !!! :lol: :lol: :lol: Old Rudolph Diesel did not invent his machine until around 800 years later. I was only giving a light-hearted clue as to my location. If I had also said,This town has a multi-storey car park which acheived eternal fame in "Get Carter" when the character played by Brian Mosely aka Alf Roberts, fell to his death from the top floor, ruining a perfectly good Zephyr 4 in the process, would anyone be any the wiser? Also, when Jimmy Nail exclaimed during an episode of Spender, "the only ship on the river now is a bloody disco !!", this town is where that ship is berthed. Just as if you mentioned daffodils I would reply as William Wordsworth or Morrisey depending on my state of mind at the time :?: Seriously though, I was trying to think of a username relevant to my recently acquired Mercedes but unfortunately did not include it in the first post of this thread so no subterfuge intended. no it wasnt!
Mecerdes was a little girl of a friend he liked the name and the cute little girl so much he named his car after her.

if his daughter was called Mecerdes then he named his daughter after her as well.

as PER MOT guide lines the engine should be warm ( preferably HOT ) and then the computer tells you when to rev it. Usually this means reving the engine FULL throttle until the Governor ( Limiter ) cuts in. This is all normal mot practice. If the emmissions are giher at the first attempt it means the computer asks for me rev tests.

Unfortuantely bar driving your vehicles around with no MOT you have no choice. Just keep it regular serviced and the cambelt changed as per manafacturer reccomendations and all will be well. IF it breaks down after this test then the vehicle couldn't of been in that good of condition to start with.
