Post subject:  In car CCTV

As a committee member of our local Private Hire Association, we are in negotation, in partnership with our Hackney Association friends, with various bodies to further the possibility of getting CCTV in our vehicles. We are led to believe that there are various routes we can explore in terms of both local and national government funding, as well as some instances of coucils allowing sponsorship deals to assist such funding, Any member out there with any experience of receiving such funding ? I would appreciate their comments/advice greatly.

I would say the chance of national funding is less than nil.

I think the best way to fund CCTV is via the council. Yes they say they are potless, but those bus folks don't seem to go short.

Maybe if your council has in house parking enforcement then a slice of the revenue from parking tickets could find it's way to the local taxi/PH trade.

If I was in your shoes I would ask for funding for a dozen or so CCTV units, and when that's successful (tell them it is even if it's not) ask for a bit more. :wink:

If you ask for too much at the beggining, then your request will be put at the back of the queue. :shock:

Of course, you could also stop trying to sponge off the local and national taxpayer, and buy a system yourself. No wonder my Council tax bill is so high.

the problem with not involving the local council is that they and the police may snub your installation i.e. if it hasn't got their seal of approval then they won't accept the cctv footage as valid when it is needed

I'm not carrying a Seal in my cab, even if it is approved. :lol: :lol: :wink:

Sorry but thats rubbish. The council have no say in whats admissable in court, thats down to the cps. The council think they have far more powers than they actually do have.

There maybe the route of a local CDRP scheme (crime disorder reduction partnership).

Either your local police or local authority should be aware.

From memory a number of license vehicles in Workington (West Cumbria) received funding and more recently there was a scheme in Sheffield.

If you know anything about councils you would know they spend every penny they get. So I would rather some of that went to the likes of me ( :D ) than to the likes of the bus folks and the tree-hugging lazy sod brigade. :wink:

This is a subject that is close to my heart also. You are hearing more and more about attacks on drivers in the trade and national media. We are just about to start lobbying our LA and would be grateful to hear of anybody elses experience in regard to getting grants from their cash starved LA.

Thats a very valid point and a lot of councils won't allow cctv in vehicles unless it comes under the jurisdiction of them and the police. Personally I want to be in charge of my own CCTV equipment just like shopkeepers etc, regardless of whether a court deems the evidence admissable or not?

There are a number of authorities that have funded a percentage of their licensed vehicles through one way or another? This can be done using funds that are earmarked for safety issues or similiar activities. We have highlighted such funding in various news items regarding cctv although I cannot at this moment point you in the right direction of those posts.

Perhaps you should contact your council and enquire about their safety groups and see if you are eligible for funding under one of their safety schemes?
