A taxi driver has asked me if she should be able to get a part refund on her plate fee. She is changing her car but the plate has only been on the old vehicle for 6 months. Alternatively should she be able to transfer the plate to the new vehicle for the remaining 6 months?

A refund? Not here anyway. They will do a substitution for £90

When she changes her car it will be for a license for 12 months, if they transfer it it will only be for what's left of the old license. Then she might have to do another vehicle test in a month or two.

That said I can see both sides of this, the driver is not getting full value for their license fee, but it is the choice of the driver to change cars. The LOs will say it's costs much the same for them (if not the same) to license a car for a year as a week.

Our council used to refund any spare months left, but times are hard for councils.

If this is of any help.... in Sefton the policy when changing a vehicle is that you will receive money back for each Clear month left on your licence, so if you change a vehicle after five months you'll receive a new 12 months Licence and pay the difference....

Same in the Borders £75 for sub, then you have still to pay the full whack £195 when its due.
This needs further investigation as the councils are ripping us off

I forgot to mention, if you Licence three cars on the same day you'll get the 4th one free...... would I lie to you.

Seftons hackney and private hire licensing department's funding is ring-fenced, the cost of actually issuing the licence is only a few pounds in administration costs. at the moment it has Over £100,000 in excess of its budget, there is talk of reducing licensing costs by 15 per cent next year or using the excess as a grant split proportionally between hackney and private hire for the purchase of more CTV.....
