Post subject:  Using a Trailer

Hi,
I am in this situation !
I am licensed with a council that does NOT have a problem with " use of a trailer" and My insurance company gives me cover to tow a trailer.

So what can I charge ?

OK..I will put this in simple terms... I was going to ask £10 to £15 extra to fix a trailer to accommodate there luggage !
Is this OK ? Or Not ?

Any advice on this wil be appreciated.

I ask this so I always stay legal and Never overcharge my passengers.

Regards Steve

Just a guess but if you are a licensed hackney carriage you can only charge what the meter shows or less. So unless the trailer is covered by "extras" you could have a problem.

I would guess every time you need the trailer it's going out of town, so basically you can quote as much or as little as you like.

You will have to quote from your house and back, and for you time fitting and unfitting the thing.

I would charge a min of £20, as TBH I couldn't stand all the f***ing about.

Surely you can only charge like that if you have an operators license and are private hire? Even if you do have the operators license and send a hackney the hackney rules apply don't they?

Depends on the conditions of the licence. We are allowed to negotiate the fare if it begins or ends outwith our licenced area.

If you are going out of your manor, IMO, you can (as a taxi) charge what you like.

And as for a taxi needing an ops license, I believe there are about 200 threads on that issue.

Correct me if I am wrong but as a hackney are you not only allowed to charge the metered fare or less?

You must charge the metered fare or less within your own district, outside of your district the fare is negotiable and negotiations must be at point of hire.

On our tarriff card it says "For large items of luggage by arrangement with the driver but not to exceed the charges for the whole journey"

So for a trailer you could charge extra as you see fit up to the fare of the journey.

I was of course refering to a journey within the district.
Most airport jobs that I have heard quotes for have been at well below the metered rate.
I metered a fare from Birmingham airport to my town a couple of weeks ago and this was at 4.00 am. It came to £96.00. I asked various taxi drivers in the town what they charge for a trip at that time of day and the most expensive was £55.00. If it was in the daytime it would have been a maximum of £50. So if you want to charge extra for a trailer in my area I doubt you would get much extra. The £55 quote was from aguy in a eurocab.

you obviously know what you're doing.... the only time I have seen trailers work is with a saloon car doing a airport run, four people and lot's of luggage, a job he would not have got with out a trailer
