Post subject:  Best way to deal with a lying customer with no more money?

Hi

I would have thought there was a thread on this area, but have had a good look around and cannot find anything.

Right - I am sure we have all had it. Pick up from say a nightclub, the person wants to go to Area A - which is around 40 miles away and therefore you would not know the roads there if the customer tells you. Anyway you say what the amount will be and the customer pays before leaving, once you get closer and closer you realise you are actually driving past Area A. When you speak to the customer he says it will be in another 30 mins drive. Therefore he obviously tried it on and lied, and will now insist on that a price was agreed, he does not have any more money.

Bearing in mind the customer is drunk, argumentative and the customers way outnumber you. What is the best way to deal with this????

Thanks

To be honest there isn't much you can do .................. but this is my advice.

When arranging a price to travel somewhere always overquote. So if you think the fare will be £20 say "it'll be around £30 mate, but I'll run the meter and if its any less I'll give you change but if its more I won't charge you any more than the £30".

That way you reduce the risk of confrontation at the other end .......... and there's nothing better than getting something cheaper the punter is happy ................ even more happy if there are 3 of them all putting in a tenner, cause the last bloke out gets his tenner back.

I find this is where sat-nav comes into it's own, just tap in their address and and you know exactly how long the journey is

The TomTom I agree is fantastic for, an issue occurs as I have a 6 seater. And they are all seperate drop offs, and it will obviously takes a long time if you have check each address before accepting the job.

I have noticed when on ranks, quite a few drivers say "no" to long runs, I guess 1 of the reasons is because of this.

I have a couple of times said to the customer "right I am going to the nearest police station" - and luckily the customer has not called my bluff.

You could grab him by the throat and leave him in the gutter, or you could take him to the police station and leave him there, or you could take him home and take it as part of the downside of our job.
