I am trying to find out how many towns in the whole of the Uk have taxi etiquette where by the punter must use the first taxi on the rank, so we can take it to the council in a bid to get them to introduce the same
Every weekend when the clubs come out its a mad rush for cabs and the punters just jump into any of them regardless of where they are on the rank
A few of the owners are against this as they feel they are allowed to pick anyone up regardless of if there are cabs ahead of them, so wont come into line and agree on some form of etiquette

I'm confused, the council do not introduce etiquette, the drivers do.

Legally a punter can get into any cab on the rank, in practise in my neck of the woods and I suspect most of the country a driver down the rank would direct the punter to the front of the rank.

That said if it is mobbed and everyone is getting a job anyway I don't suppose it would matter.

In my town there is no such thing as using the first in the queue. Punters use the cab they want.

There is no written rule here as such, but we maintain the etiquette and point punters to the front cab.

That said, they are free to use any cab they want.

The law doesn't require the public to use the first taxi on a taxi rank, however I think you will find that most areas operate an orderly queueing system.

Mind you, from experience I find the etticate of old is swiftly vanishing.

free for all round our way and as the LO pointed out to me it is the customers right to be able to choose whixh cab they take and not be forced to take the front of the queue

Any such "etiquette" is actually ILLEGAL under consumer law

Which consumer law would that be Edders?

There are four ranks around St Andrews, but while in the past it's been a free for all, more recently there's been a bit of a change at one of the ranks.

This is because the council rearranged the rank at the station and the exit is now at the middle part of the rank, so a lot of punters are just approaching the third/fourth car.

Because typical waiting times here are between one and two hours the drivers realised that this was getting beyond the joke, so most of the regular drivers at least are sending fares to the front.

Otherwise it's a free for all, but what particularly annoys me is the drivers who try to manipulate this to their advantage, for example hanging up when they think that will help them get a run.

Another thing that annoys me is that when a car has a driver change the drivers sometimes comes to the car rather than the usual scenario, so the new driver gets parachuted into the middle or front of the rank. Does this happen elsewhere?

We're on a free for all. The ranks are just about arranged so that the natural approach is to the front car but a lot of customers have their favourite drivers, during the day at least.

The way the rank is at East Dereham, the car at the back actually stands a better chance of picking up than the one at the front

We have the go to the front cab type etiquete.

If drivers now started thinking they wouldn't follow that routine then they probably not get off the rank until vehicles in front would let them.

To be honest its just basic manners, if some guy has been sat waiting for an hour and you pull on and someone jumps in its just rude to queue jump IMO.

There seems to be a mixture of some have to and some dont,
now as we are all charge the same price in our area's alegidly, and the law says the punter can take any cab they wish, would it be more feasible to try and get that law changed so that punters have to use the first one, or if they want a certain cab either wait for it to get there, or call it off,

I had blindly assumed that all areas followed the same etiquette, apparently not so.

Not sure that a law change is necessary, if everyone is playing by the same rules it will even itself out in the end. By that I mean if you are in an area where anything goes, sometimes you will be the one at the front of the rank who loses out and sometimes you will get lucky at the back.

The problems arise when there is an etiquette and some drivers don’t follow it.

I’m glad I work an area where common decency rules.

I'm quite sure the rank system here works quite well, as a smack on the hooter makes drivers queue properly.

I wonder if Mr Skull has an English cousin or two? :?

If they all charge the same, all cleaned their cars the same :D , all cleaned themselves the same  , all drove at a reasonable speed and remembered that they did actually have people in the car, then maybe the punters would happily get in the first available vehicle.

Or better still just call your favourite friendly PH to pick you up next to the rank

You may have a point there in some cases, but the majority of the time I think it's just a case of the punters getting into the nearest available taxi, eg back or mid-rank.

Not only that, I think a lot of these saddoes enjoy this kind of thing because they know it winds the drivers up.

Tiny things please tiny minds.
