Taxi Driver Online

Following on from the “first taxi on the rank” thread I’d be interested to hear how taxi etiquette differs around the country.

My understanding of my area (London Yellow badge Barking and Dagenham, Newham, Havering and Redbridge) is

First cab on the rank gets the job

No picking up close to a rank (not too sure what the definition of close is)

No overtaking of cabs plying

It another cab lets you out let him overtake you.

That’s all I can think of, any different in your area?

A lot of the guys down here would like to do it properly, and accordingly do so - we have others and it is getting worse, who are no more than a pack of animals. I have a lot of working mates and would not pick up in front of them, but I will do unto others what they do to me. Not a nice way to be, just trying to level the playing field.

It went berserk years ago when they started issuing plates left right and centre..... cabs everywhere, cutting each other up, parking tickets left right and centre, but when the cap went back on it gave the trade a chance to reorganise.... the funny thing though, out of all the plates that were issued, there is not one that is left with the person it was issued to.... but many members of the trade who were not issued a plate are still here today.... working in a orderly fashion...

I've seen cars pick up so close to the rank that the car picking up and the car at the front of the road are blocking the road between them.

Is that close enough?:?



Overtake at the earliest opportunity. If you can't get past then make sure you tailgate the car in front



Make sure you don't let other cabs out.

depends on which firm the driver works for and wether he is a local or a Peterborough based driver

At the town rank it is the first car the punter chooses

At the railway station it is a free for all with many of the peterborough based drivers poaching other companies bookings !! if their drivers are not already there waiting when the train comes in

One local company books their fares in from the front of the rank and uses that as an excuse to push their vehicles in ahead of the front car

That same company also if they see cars pulling from the front of the rank at night and they are heading towards it fly past everyone at high speed and cut in they did once get it wrong and hit the car moving forward

The local drivers do tend to let each other out of junctions etc and to a certain extent the Peterborough drivers do as well

And both sets of drivers phone up the council licensing section daily reporting any little misdemeanour /fault with vehicles

In private hire we have a few unwritten rules.
If a driver gets a scrub, he goes top of the plot.
If he gets a runner, controller will try and make it up to him.

However, drivers at my office tout outside the office and nick jobs all the time. Dog eat dog in london.

Are you alluding that the lack of order is a result of de-restricted Taxi numbers?

I thought that was meant to mean everyone lived in Utopia?

Credit card jobs should be passed back to the Radio Taxi . . . . . . with pleasure . . . .

No, but if they 'de-restrict' the Knowledge we will.

Just look at the opposition now, they will then be entitled to wreck our trade.

we sorted some( private hire) touts out the other day there is a realy good way of doing in but i cant say on here ....
