London Mayor and Greater London Assembly Election 2008
As Trade Unions, we support Ken because he will deliver a better London and a better work/life balance for Londoners. Recently, Ken Livingstone wrote to trade union members to outline why this election is so important to all of us:
“Although this will be a London election, with a huge amount at stake for Londoners, it is also an election that will have a national impact. This is an election that will starkly stake pro-trade union policies, with the policies of a slash and burn Thatcherite in Boris Johnson.
The Conservatives don’t act in the interest of trade unionists. It’s not just because of their record in the past – abolishing the old Greater London Council, starving public services of cash, cutting police numbers – but what they stand for now.
Boris Johnson, the Tory candidate for Mayor, is standing on a platform which will take London in the wrong direction and hurt the interests of trade unionists.
* He wants to abolish the policy that half of all new homes should be affordable – which would shift housing development into higher priced housing out of the hands of working people.
* He strongly supported the privatisation of the railways, and is instinctively hostile to public services remaining in public hands.
* He called the National Minimum Wage, one of the great Trade Union victories of recent years, a move that would “destroy jobs”.
Trade unionists across the country are in a position to lend a hand in the run up to the May election. By signing up you will be able to influence the debate by joining online petitions, donating to my campaign, and by helping inform friends and family about the key issues.”
Over the coming months, TULO and trade union’s will be emailing members with news, updates and with new ways in which you can be involved in the trade union campaign.
Trade unionists in London and around Britain can lend support to the campaign in a number of ways. Please join the TULO email list to keep in touch or consider donating to Ken Livingstone’s campaign through his website.
London trade union’s are getting behind Ken because, in his words, “since becoming Mayor in 2000, I have worked closely with all of London’s trade unions to ensure that our city’s economic success benefits everyone. Together, we have put in place better employment policies, promoted a London living wage, and improved our public transport system. “
There is a clear choice to make in May – join the campaign and help us get Ken back in.
