Post subject:  Glasgow Airport taxi firm ‘linked to crook’

Sunday Mail
10.03.08

A taxi firm linked to a fraudster has won a £1.9m contract to improve Glasgow Airport security, the Sunday Mail reports. Inverclyde Taxis will supply radios to 155 vehicles operating from the airport. The Greenock firm will monitor taxi movements and relay the information to police and security chiefs.

The company won the highly lucrative contract despite links to the town's Easdale family, headed by convicted fraudster Sandy, the newspaper reports. The 39-year-old scrap metal merchant is not a director of Inverclyde Taxis but his wife Gail, 40, has been for the last six years. In addition his mother Christine and brother James, 36, are directors of Inverclyde's parent company Arranglen.

Inverclyde was awarded the contract following a security review after last year's failed terror attack which decided each car's position should be pinpointed. The 155 drivers will each pay the firm £60-a-week - £3120-a-year - to operate from the airport forecourt. That will total more than £1.9m over the four-year contract.

Sandy Easdale was jailed for 27 months in 1997 for his part in a VAT scam selling stolen computer parts. A judge ruled he made £1.5m from the con. When the newspaper tried to contact Mr Easdale at Inverclyde's office they were told he was unavailable. Boss Henry Glasgow said he has no involvement with the firm. An airport spokesman said: ‘Inverclyde was chosen as they offered the best service.

Interesting quote from an airport driver posted on the Glasgow based Evenng Times website http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/disp ... 20.0.0.php

What its like to be a taxi driver at Glasgow Airport

7am your day starts when you pull up to the airport rank to find that your colleges are out as much as 2 hours before you and you are at the end of a queue of over 100 taxis

8.15 am you finally get to the front of the rank to be faced with a client who wants to as always get to Glasgow ASAP for that important meeting at 9am however you cannot get access to the motorway for some 10 minutes as there has been a break down and the road is congested after this you finally get under way and find as you get to the Kingston bridge the congestion has got worse and by the time you get to your destination your passenger is late, you are stressed and your fare has been earned your first £18.00 of the day

9.35am back to the rank you find it still very busy and you wait another hour for your next hire a gentleman gets in and asks how much to go to Gilmour street station you finish the job now with another £3.60 in your takings

10.48am luckily as this is a local hire you immediately get back to the beginning of the rank and son you are on your way to Ibrox another £14

11.27 am back at the airport to find the rank is overflowing and you are parked at the Loganair hangar a 2 hour wait ahead with now with £35.60 in you pocket you wonder just how profitable this is so you settle down with a book and start reading

1.45pm your 4th hire of the day and you are off to the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow another £20.00 you get in to a conversation with your passenger to try and negotiate a return hire for the next morning however he says that he will be off to Edinburgh in the morning and will get the train.

2.30pm arrive back at the rank and again its very busy and you have another 2 hour wait

4.24pm you finally reach the front of the rank and again you are on your way to Glasgow city centre again the Kingston bridge is very busy and you finally get to your destination at 5.28pm and another £20.00 by the time you fight through the rush hour traffic its now 6.10pm and again another wait luckily its quick

7.24pm you set off for the Radisson hotel again another £20.00 and quickly back to the rank by 8.15 pm

9.32pm and were off to Linwood unfortunately this time by the time you get back to the rank its after 10pm and you do not qualify for a local hire token and its back to the back of the rank luckily its getting busier and you only wait 20mins

10.05 pm and were off to East Kilbride you ponder whether to go via Paisley of via the motorway after consulting with your passenger you decide its cheaper to go via Paisley another £27.00 taken

11.09pm you arrive back at the rank you have now been working over 15 hours and you are feeling tired the last shuttle lands and you are 25th in the queue by the time you get to the front of the rank its 11.54pm and there’s no a sole to be found you count up your takings and head home

12.06 am you fuel up and head home looking at your totals you quickly work out the following

Hours worked 16
Total amount of takings £155.60
Cost of fuel £34.00
Total left to take home £121.60

Weekly costs of being a taxi driver at Glasgow Airport

• Plate hire £160.00 - Council policy is that there are enough taxis in the area and so the licences that are available are held by the few and as the council say they have no monetary value you have to obtain a lease for a licence from a shady character who luckily enough managed to apply for 10 of these he collects £1600.00 per week 52 weeks of the year Totalling over £83000 per year tax free and with no outlay having never put anything back in to the taxi trade you sometimes wonder if this is not the equivalent of a gang master
• Vehicle costs - Renfrewshire council decided that you must have a wheelchair accessible taxi this costs £27500. As you are on a low income the finance costs are more expensive as you are credit scored high risk your weekly payment is £97.00
• Insurance - Public hire insurance is £1025 per year the weekly cost is £19.00
• Fuel - As with all road transport costs we have seen rises in both fuel duty and increased fuel prices due to the rise in crude oil prices your taxi is a diesel you are now paying £210.00 per week to for fuel. This will see you able to stretch to anywhere from 850 miles to 1200 miles
• Vehicle Maintenance - Most Taxis are very well maintained but an average cost would be expected to be in the region of £40.00 per week
• Council charges - Annual inspection fee is £80.00 a set of new taxi plates
• Tax and National insurance . Based on an average yearly take home gross of £18000 the national insurance contributions and tax due are on average of £4000 per year with an estimated figure of £80.00 per week

Now with an extra £1.00 exit fee at Glasgow and with £60.00 per week the job is equal to wages 20 years ago and your average hourly rate is £4.40
