Post subject:  Cannot use Horn

Hi All

All Rochester Medway Council Drivers (PH + Hack) have recently been notified that we cannot use our Horn when picking up fares (day or night). With the statement also reading that if drivers are reported/caught using the Horn they will not just get a verbal warning, but a straight written warning.

This may not sound like a big issue, however for the majority of house jobs I have done in the last week or so I have had to wait ages. Eventually the passenger comes out and I get the usual "I did know you were out there". We are therefore obliged to wait for a bit and then knock the door. This sounds simple, but no one wants to leave their gps/money in their car. Also the bigger problem is that more often that not there is no parking nearby.

Does anyone else have to put up with this silly "no horn" procedure?

Yes, I know it is daft but the way we have to do it so that we don't leave the car is to take the phone number when they book and ring back when we arrive, just another expense.

Well it's actually the law of the land, but I know what your on about.

Get your firm to get a radio system with a 'call-back' function.

I've only been driving a short while - but it's one of the things that's annoyed me already. How about one of those £1 laser beams waggled around all over the living room windows...? (runs off to invent TaxiDriversFriend™)

common sense prevails

112
The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn

while stationary on the road
when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am
except when another road user poses a danger.

"LaserCabs - you'll know when we're outside" I can see it now... To be honest, I'm out in rural areas and there's not a lot of risk, but it's still a hassle when you're warm and snug and it's peedling down outside.

That might just work, the first time you use it. What about the next time, and the one after that?

I have a powerfull touch to look at house numbers in the dark, if there are any.. but when I get to the house I flash the light at the windows.. works well..

I hate the lack of house numbers ,or they are so small you cant read them from the kerb.

Worse when there are no house numbers and it's a daft house name instead.
