Taxi fares rise above average

Taxi fares in Dacorum are to rise above the national average.

The meter will start at £2.60, or £3.90 after 11pm, compared to the current £2.20 and £3.30, and the national average £2.33 and £3.14.

Minimum fares on Christmas, Boxing and New Year's Day will also rise from £4.40 to £5.20.

The rates were fixed at a licensing meeting on Tuesday when Dacorum Borough councillors approved the increase in the face of more than 50 objection letters.

Many of those writing against an increase, including both cabbies and customers, said higher prices would put people off using taxis.

A two-mile journey in Dacorum will now set customers back £5, or £7.50 after 11pm. The national average works out at £4.71 and £6.26.

Councillors defended the new charges, claiming the reason for taking fares above the national average was to cater for fuel costs.

Some Hemel Hempstead cabbies asked councillors to up the tariffs even further to cover the soaring cost of fuel.

Councillor Alexander Bhinder said: "Fares may go above the national average in the short term, but looking at possible fuel costs in the next two years has been taken into consideration.

"We can't predict the future in that way, but have tried to bear it in mind."

The increased fares apply to all licensed Hackney Carriages. Private hire drivers do not have to use the tariffs.

Tariff One:

Distance; New fare in Dacorum; National average.

One mile; £3.40; £3.13

Two miles; £5; £4.71

Five miles; £9.80; £9.43

10 miles; £17.80; £17.35

Tariff Two*:

Distance; New fare in Dacorum; National average.

One mile; £5.10; £4.20

Two miles; £7.50; £6.26

Five miles; £14.70; £12.46

10 miles; £26.70; £22.91

*Tariff Two applies between 11pm and 7am; on Sundays and Bank Holidays; and between 6pm and midnight on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Well why not run a 3p a mile and then you will have millions of punters. Image

So who will get nearly all the fares now not the hacks anyway.

Well, it would seem that the lights are on, but there's nobody in on planet Skippy.

Jimbo as your chomping at the bit for an answer, here is an example of why the PH are winning.

Having just read the new tariffs for London, I found that the an 18 mile run there is £50 the same run in the Borders is £25, you could actually get to Edinburgh at 34 miles for £50.
If we had the London tariff here, there would be no taxis.
If the fares are to high the punters cut back on taxi use, and as the PH in Dacorum do not have to use the tariff sheet, I take it they do not have meters also, they could actually cut there fares and clean up, leaving the taxis sitting on the ranks with there fingers in neutral.
But there is a way around this and that is any taxi tariff sheet is the maximum that can be charged, and the driver is free to charge less, but the majority dont

PH will always win cos they are flexible and adaptable to change, and the other side simply ain't and never will be.

Unless the competition is made up of non-english speaking drivers who don't have a clue where Trafalgar Square is, means we will always be onto a winner.

The fact the competition is 'led' by two clowns also has it's plus points.

Everywhere I go lately, I see PH parked up, driver asleep, or reading a paper. Those that can speak English tell me they are thinking of handing back their motors to scab direct. Not every intending passenger is as price obsessed as you think, old bean. Those that are, are not worth bothering with. Some, even many prefer a standard of service above a low price. I regularly hear tales of PH drivers who cannot communicate in English, (which are clearly true, why else would the council be bringing in english language and numaracy tests?) A punter who is going home, might just, know his own postcode, but will he know his Mum's or Gran's or the dentist's when asked for it? What most want is a good, honest, reliable service, with a driver who knows where they are going, who will turn up on time, and will not be trying to rip them off. PH cheaper than the Hacks? Try telling that to the customer of County Cars, who was charged £6 for 900 yards, (£4 in a hack) or the punters who were charged £12:40 from the John Bull in Bracebridge Heath, £7:20 in a Hack, and then be told by the driver "No change, my tip!"

If consumers are purely price led as you purport, why do some people pay £175 for a pair of jeans, (or more) when they could get a pair from Tesco's for £3?
