My eldest son went into a well known York Private Hire office last saturday at around 3am and asked to be taken home, he was issued with a raffle ticket and told to get in the next car that pulled up outside. On telling the driver where he would like to go the conversation went something like this. Son" My dad's a taxi driver and his meter doesn't start at £4.05" Driver "Oh I must have caught the wrong button, who does your dad drive for?" Son " he has his own hackney, you'll see it on the drive when you pull up at our house" Driver " I'll just turn this meter off it's gone faulty and just give me a fiver" When I telephoned their office the following day to ask who the driver was the controller said, no idea luv we just give em a ticket so that constitutes a booking and tell em to get in a car it could have been any one of 50 drivers. good ere innit |

My wife who is also a taxi driver took a black cab in London once. The meter went on and so did extras (she was alone and none were due). During the course of the journey she said to the driver "good those Halda's aren't they, I have one in my cab". Strangely enough at the other end the extras where not charged

Sounds like the LA are rather lax with booking records of PH offices

There is another story here..... Dad's taxi was parked in his drive whilst 50 private hire vehicles were covering the anti social market. Or am I missing the point? |

The private hire operator has to keep a record of all bookings and that means the driver who serviced the actual booking. There are no exceptions. Regards JD |

A few months ago our enforcement officer made an appointment and came out to inspect my records. As you would expect, everything was in order. |

I don't think we would expect anything less. We know you are on the ball, just as we know every other operator who subscribes to TDO is on the ball. You all deserve credit. Regards JD |

If they have a meter within the car then surely they subcribe to having a fare table, if they are not using the meter they then must tell/quote you the fare before you start off. I would also have thought by having a meter they cannot charge more than the metered fare within the bounderies OR am I wrong? |

If they have a meter within the car then surely they subcribe to having a fare table, The meter will have a tarrif as presumably set by the PH Operator and not the LA. if they are not using the meter they then must tell/quote you the fare before you start off. In theory yes, in practice no. I would also have thought by having a meter they cannot charge more than the metered fare within the bounderies OR am I wrong? Your presuming the meter is set right, the LA dont check it and you'll be lucky if the PH Operator does, although admittedly if the driver trys to overcharge and the PH operator finds out he probably wont be best pleased. |
