With diesel around 13- 15p a litre or aproximately 12.5% more expensive than petrol, it is getting close to the same in full costs alone. If that gap reaches 20%, then petrol will become cheaper than diesel. Factor in the fact that petrol motors are cheaper to buy new and you will be on a winner. This will only hold true if the price gap is maintained.

Second hand diesels are more expensive to buy mainly because of their lower running costs. If that is no longer a factor, their value will drop off.

Large and even medium sized saloons will be less sought after anyway as joe public tries to offset the increased fuel prices and road taxes with a more frugal set of wheels.

at what poing does it make sense to swap from diesel to petrol as car fuel, considering that a diesel car is dearer to buy etc. There can't be much in it at the moment?

It's ok if you have a choice I suppose. Many of us are stuck with purpose built diesels.

Manual LTI vehicles will give you approx 6 miles to a litre so 42 miles works out at 7 litres which at 1.30 a litre is 9.10. If that's not a strong argument for choice then I don't know what is? I think ive said this before, but derv should be cheaper than petrol, its an oil, not a spirit and im certain its cheaper to produce, the gap in price has widened between the two as the diesels have gotten more popular (and, ironically) more economical. it seems the oil companies realised a while back that they would suffer reduced income if everyone bought 60mpg tdi's instead of 30mpg petrol cars look at chelsea tractors, a big v8 petrol may do 15mpg wheras a tdi maybe 30mpg, when no-one buys a petrol version how would shell maintain thier income? easy, bump up derv. the rumour has always been that the oil companies also snap up any fuel saving devices that work, well if you were mr bp would you welcome the arrival of the 200mpg family saloon? i wish id never bought a diesel ever, but needing a big van i had LDV, 2 smiley transits, a fiat ducato, a citroen relay (arrrgggh nurse!) and a merc sprinter (best van ever) , all diesels, i currently have a mondeo tdci 130 on the road and a tourneo 125 55 plate, frankly id rather have a petrol with a lpg conversion.

There is still a massive difference in mileage rates, IMO 30%-40%. The difference in price at the mo is less than 10%. Please no-one think that it's cheaper to run a petrol.
