I would like to know everyone's thoughts as to how to build up phone work for a new taxi office?

If you are starting off from scratch from a new office in an area that has alot of walking night trade how can you build up the phone work to bring in more drivers?

I will be offering 10% discount for OAP's which will help the day work, considering offering 10% for students on production of a student card and will offer a free raffle and prize worth say £40 to everyone who travels in one of our cars. Also make sure that all drivers give out cards to everyone that gets in the car!

Thats all I have come up with and would like to know anyones thoughts on these ideas and what else would be good to build the business?

Would drivers work at an office that offers 10% to students or is it best to just stick to OAP's?

Building business is through service, but service comes with having cabs out.

Now thats a contri aint it eusasmiles.zip

Local Press ads seem to be a waste plus you could probably come up with ideas for 'free' publicity.

The internet is a semi decent cheap source if you get a website and a few ad's on google or suchlike...but dont go for them companies that will claim to advertise you... they are a rip.

Local radio maybe....with a really annoying but rememberable advert?

And finally, but should have probably have come first.....drivers that are half decent and not others cast offs........the ones that dont give a... you knowthe type.

Reliable Service.....clean cabs and drivers.....and polite people on the phones.

best of luck and give me half of your first million

Sensible drivers should be concerned with what they have in their pockets at the end of the week, not necessarily how it got there i.e. do 15 jobs at 90% of the meter rather than 10 jobs at 100%.

But in the first instance it's down to the number and down to you getting that number into folks phones and minds.

i.e.:-

wrexhamtaxi.co.uk

cos then its visible in yr ad, if you dont (and i havent...) you have to take an paid for advert to publicise a domain.....

Make sure your company name starts at the beginning of the Alphabet, it'll be the 1st they see when looking in the likes of yellow pages and phone books etc. Word of mouth and carding has to be the best and the cheapest. See if you can put your cards in local pubs, clubs, cafes etc just think the walking exercise will do you good as well as the new business

Forget discounts - drivers tend to avoid offices which offer them.
The sort of punters who want 60p off a £6 fare aren't likely to be the worlds best tippers.

Have a facility to take card payments instead. More and more people want to pay with plastic.

A good experienced local radio operator is worth their weight in gold. They will bring drivers and work with them

Nail down a couple of decent contracts that will keep the office ticking over during quiet spells

Most important:
Be prepared to lose money in the first few months while you grow your business. You can't expect drivers to pay a fortune for a radio with little or no work.

I would suggest that you don't try to grow too quickly. If you already have some biggish company's around you, they will not take kindly to you trying to muscle in on their bussiness. you may just find that you end up getting loads of ghost bookings over the phone.

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I already have a website and the web address is http://www.wrexhamtaxi.co.uk if anyone wants to check it out and let me know what they think?!

I have already come up with name 'Speedie Cars' so I cant start with something at the begining of the alphabet!

I know where you are coming from in regards to discount, but I think that an OAP discount will help build up the phone work but I not too sure as to student discount. On the one hand it will help build up the work but as others have said it might keep drivers from starting at the office in the first place!

I intend to take only good drivers and have a system to weed out the rubbish ones who overcharge etc and place cards in all the pubs and anywhere else I can think as well as a leaflet drop. But all this comes at a cost so I need to build the phone work quickly as I know where the office will be situated there is alot of walk-in trade that I will be able to grab.

Here's to 20 hour shifts in the near future!

Its only my opinion but speedie cars is not the best of names for a taxi/ph company something a little more conservative would sound better.
