Toothless woman bolted on taxi bill, bit officer

A Toothless woman bit a police officer who tried to take a cigarette away from her at a service station.

The woman, who was confronted by police after she did not pay a taxi fare, bit a female officer on the index and middle fingers but her gums did not break the skin.

Sonja Ann Prass, 47, pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court to assaulting police and evading a taxi fare in March this year.

Police prosecutor Phillip Stephens told the court Ms Prass wanted to catch a taxi from a Nambour caravan park to Brisbane which the driver told her would cost about $280

He said she told the taxi driver the price seemed too steep, gave him $50 and asked him to run the meter.

The woman stopped at an ATM and withdrew $350 cash.

But when she got to Stafford she became confused and asked to return to the Sunshine Coast.

Sergeant Stephens said the fare totalled $417.90 but when the taxi stopped at a service station on the Coast the woman returned to the cab with a receipt saying insufficient funds.

“She said she would not pay the cab driver any more money because she would not have any money (left),” he said.

Staff from the BP service station asked police to advise Ms Prass to put out the cigarette for safety reasons but she refused.

She bit the female officer who tried to remove the smoke and then kicked her in the leg. She was swearing and spat at officers but no spittle landed on them.

When Sgt Stephens told the court the officer suffered soreness on her hand and leg, Ms Prass called out “I don’t have any teeth”.

Solicitor Ross Felmingham said his client had 21 tooth extractions last year and was awaiting a set of dentures.

He said Ms Prass became homeless shortly prior to when her mother died after a long battle with cancer and had set up camp at the caravan park.

Mr Felmingham said she had to leave because the camp had booked out and she had planned to go to her father’s but became disoriented and could not find the address.

He said the woman, who was diagnosed with mental health issues after the incident, did not want to return to the Sunshine Coast but felt she had no choice.

Ms Prass was fined $550, must pay the remaining $292.40 taxi fare and pay $200 compensation to the police officer.
