Post subject:  Does anyone recognise this uniform

I know its a long shot, but as I said a while ago, my grandad was Scottish and in the 1914 war he was in a Scottish regiment. But no one in the family today can remember which one.
Does anyone recognise this uniform?
or can point me in the direction of a web site that can help?

Cheers. :)

Your best bet will be the head gear, I think the one in the picture is a glengarry and it was worn only by a few scots regiments.

I think from the size of the cap-badge it could be the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Although there were a few London Scots regiments.

the "cap" is actually a "Glengarry"

just so you dont get set about by any roving A&S Highlanders...

send these the picture, they may know...

You could also try asking the Royal British Legion. They may be able to trace the regiment from his name and any address you may have.

All highland regiments wore the kilt, and all lowland regiments wore trews so it could be a KOSB badge ( Kings own Scottish Border's.

Could you enlarge the area around the glengarry and post it

I believe the highland regiments stopped wearing the kilt during WW1 because of the trench conditions and especially because body lice loved to live in the pleats of the kilt.

Thanks so much for the info I will try all the possibilities.
I will try to get hold of the original photo and enlarge the cap and post it in the near future.
Cheers all.

Try to concentrate on the cap badge. The rest of the uniform looks to be pretty much standard issue.

have you tried to search for his service history? it may be easier that way, where was he living at the time of WW1, where would he have signed up?

a glengarry with a diced headband and a two-part badge? a little like the fusilier badges, no hackle?
