In light of recent legal challenges, court rulings and the following news article, should all posters on TDO be a little more careful in what we type?

Here is the article, which I have posted in this section for a little discretion, but Admin might wish to transfer it to the News section;

Twitter hands over UK user Ahmed Khan's details in libel case
Twitter has handed over the personal details of British councillor Ahmed Khan, following a US court ruling that could have implications for Ryan Giggs' clash with the microblogging site

29th May, 2011

The ruling, which relates to a libel case, is the first time Twitter has been forced to surrender information relating to its British users.

Lawyers representing Manchester United footballer Giggs recently obtained a High Court order in London demanding that Twitter hand over details of accounts used to breach a privacy injunction.

It is believed Twitter has not complied because the ruling was unenforceable in the US, where the company is based.

However, South Tyneside councillors Iain Malcolm, David Potts and Anne Walsh, together with the council's head of enterprise Rick O'Farrell, have managed to force Twitter to supply information after applying for an order at a court in California.

They are attempting to begin a defamation action against a mystery blogger known as Mr Monkey, who has made a number of allegations about them.

Similar criticisms have been made on Twitter since 2009 and they demanded that the social networking service provides details of five accounts, including the name, email address, telephone number and geographical location of the users.

One of them is Mr Khan, an independent councillor in South Tyneside, who denies any involvement in the Mr Monkey blog.

He was shocked to discover Twitter had released details of his account, including direct messages.

Mr Khan said: 'If a council can take this kind of action against one of its own councillors simply because they don't like what I say, what hope is there for freedom of speech or privacy?'

He added: 'It not only breaches my human rights, but it potentially breaches the human rights of anyone who has ever sent me a message on Twitter.'

Members should always be careful what they write, but I have a feeling that TDO admin would struggle to find the correct details of the 'ownership' of any certain post. :roll: :roll:

But if anyone has a problem with any post then they are (if not already a member) at liberty to register and point out any untruths.

Alex
