I do really wish,..That I could have a bet on the outcome of this... my money would be on the private hire side.... in London you can transfer a booking from company to company, and has been Law for many years... but not so for the rest of the country... I tend to think the private hire have a valid point.... and it could well be that people with common sense would agree.....

Well what can I say, apart from a load of sheit,
Nearly all councils have a basic standard for cabs and PH but its the price of a licence thats the problem, thats why owners are going to the cheapest council area, getting there licence, and then working there own area just like this http://taxi-driver.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15825

You miss the point skippy.

The reason people shop around for licenses is invariably different standards in different areas.

Some areas have knowledge tests. Some areas have age limits on vehicles.

To circumvent local requirements people shop around for standards far more than price.

You only have to look in your nearest port, look at the number of foreign registered ships.......they're only foreign registered because to fly under the British flag means higher standards.

The term flag of convenience describes the business practice of registering a merchant ship in a sovereign state different from that of the ship's owners, and flying that state's civil ensign on the ship. Ships are registered under flags of convenience to reduce operating costs or avoid the regulations of the owner's country.

I know what your saying CC but price is the dominant factor, EG 2 councils have exactly the same criteria, but 1 is £100 cheaper to obtain the licence from, so who do you go to??

The costs of running a licensing regime differ from area to area due to some areas being for example a City.

I am not prepared to accept the price of a license is the over-riding factor skippy, I think if a council has an age limit on first license of 3 years old and another has no age policy whatsoever, the applicant will go where he can get his shed licensed.

Very interesting. :?

Some evidence givers did their cause good, and others .........................

The committee members did go on about a one tier national system.

Which begs the question how are we all going to get on those London ranks.

There wasn't one.

But didn't the chair mention another chance for folks wanting to give evidence?

They did not getting their point over to the committe!

They were not at all fluid in their submissions, probably because most of them don't drive a cab or PHV & it's not second nature to them.

I have to agree, all though I wasn't that impressed with the committee.

I understand Mr Wilson stated that Berwick didnt issue licenses south of Surrey......presumably because the next stop was France

That aside......I always thought Paignton was further from Berwick than Surrey was........and I dont need a sat nav.

I see Mr Griffen said it was madness that everyone wasn't licensed the same.

So no-doubt he will be supporting a knowledge test for his drivers, and a DSA taxi test, and disability training, and English tests, and numeracy tests.

Or does he want the UK trade to go down to London standards?
