Is this a photo of an NTA board meeting, a Unite the Union meeting, an NPHA board meeting, an NTTG board meeting, a TDO member's meeting, or just a meeting of random taxi drivers?

And is the elephant a regular attendee at these meetings, because elephants are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence.

Nope......is a picture of the massive elephant in the room that almost everyone is forgetting about.

Lets not forget the nature and ultimate objective of the law commission enquiry and it's 'Deregulatory' approach.

From what I've read the unions and some others seem more interested in getting their training schemes underpinned in any new act........its as if training (or the lack of it) has brought us to this current situation ffs.

Everyone seems to be p*ssing about with things like CRB checks, driver medicals, training and so on..........not one of the things mentioned are the failings of either the 1847 or 1976 acts.

They also seem content in allowing local authorities to take charge of any new act.......I point out that these are the same local authorities that have and continue to fail the current laws.

They seem to want licensing funded via fines.....................can anyone tell me if they've discussed their new goals with the drivers who'll receive the fines???

I might well say....ffs.

Indeed not everyone, just those with their noses in the trough.

This, for some maybe most, is going to end in tears.

But not me, cos I'm immune to such things, I think. 8-[

I'm glad....but sad that we agree.......I see no driver representation......I see drivers getting sh*fted.

I see a lot of people who havent got a f*cking clue about what's being contemplated.

You may well be right, but you can't do everything for the 1000s of drivers that are clueless and apathetic.

That's their problem, not yours.

You would have thought that Local Authorities along with all those government funded Quango's leading the way that the word "Consultation" would be the IN word...yet a million LA Fuhrers and government Quangocrats all seem to have been issued with a Government dictionary with the C-Word missing.

Tommy McIntyre Unite the Union

17. Tommy McIntyre welcomed the review. He thought that the way forward was to specify some national standards – possibly even a “national taxi badge” – he suggested looking at some of the sensible taxi byelaws around the country and drawing on them might be helpful. He thought that taxi licensing should be locally financed with local accountability.

44. Tommy McIntyre thought that there should be a qualification which applicants should achieve before entering the trade.

Now it will come as a surprise to no-one that I don't particularly have a lot of time for this union, but I would like to know on who's authority he committed his union to these comments?

Would his London members be fans of a national taxi driver's license?

I wonder who would be arranging this new supa dupa qualification?

Surely not him and his gang?

I think what is meant is that a national DVLA licence for HC & PC drivers [just like a national HGV driver licence] should be attained by all coming into the trade first, BEFORE a regional LA licence can be applied for.

And the 'fit and proper' requirement comes in at the LA stage.

I have to say that after an informative meeting with some of the people from the Law Commission it was interesting to note that London was also to be included in this reform

It certainly explains, why the London private hire were so keen to be part of the Transport Select Committee, so a new act which will include all of England Wales and this time London should be interesting.... and if things go as they have before....... it won't be long before Scotland follows suit..... I like the bit where they said they have been charged with the task of deregulating the laws regarding hackney and private hire......

Don't you mean that tonight was Bonfire Night?

Or indeed yesterday was Bonfire Night because you posted on the 6th?

Or in fact last night was Bonfire Night?
