Biggest winners are the large PH operators who will be able to spread their wings with ease, and large chunks of the unlicensed trade.

Biggest losers are taxi plate-holders in restricted areas, and large taxi owner run companies.

If I was to guess the percentage of the trade who will be winners (better off than at present) against the percentage of losers (worse off than at present), then I would say 90%+ would be losers.

Are you in the 10% or the 90%?

For the record, and it's a very rare thing for me, I'm with the majority.

They have the deepest pockets tho, so what do you expect. Perhaps I'm being cynical again

Now I want you all to know I have the ideal solution to this, one chainsaw and a few selected visit's and I'm sure everything will be ok

Only kidding, I can't afford the gas to power it these days.

to be honest I don't think I am in either I cannot see this having as much an impact round here as it will in the larger metropolitan areas UNLESS we end up with large numbers of cabs from other areas coming into town on a saturday night to try their luck from Central effectively we operate a one tier system with little or no barriers to entry which is already flooded out and the pickings are so slim that there is little likelihood that the big boys would touch our area with a bargepole

Cant See it affecting me much either out here in my Rural retreat just on the Scots side of the English Border...But who knows, once the Big Boys advertise Nationally it may well be that they become the first name that comes into a punters head before he phones for a car...but then again a Taxi to come from the Big Boys City bases to take him to the Local boozer might turn into a £100 run each way journey..where I,m probably still a better bet at a Fiver each way..the nice thing is that 95% of my work is generated locally through Individuals or Hotels etc..and I really cant see them wishing to change that, if they wanted to use the Big boys then they could be using them now.

TBH all it's doing for me is legalising what is already going on locally, the drivers blame the council, but tbh it's not the council it's the government, too much insider trading going on, now I'm unsure if I should continue to view life as a test and carry on eating bow waves or adopt strategy and polish up my sideways moving chess piece ready to invade and pillage any ass I think might shake out something worth taking.

There is a positive way to look at it.
All the circuits I have worked on have had drivers that shouldn't of been on there, rude, dodgy ect.
If the big boys came into town it would force the current companies and their drivers to run their businesses in a professional manner. The firms that understood that customer service was the single most important thing to their business, as apposed to the amount of drivers they could take on, would succeed.
For the driver that goes about their work in a proffestional manner, no matter what the knowledge test, will be much values asset.

There could be an element of that, but on the other hand look at the London minicab trade.

Indeed, to an extent the approach suggested by the LC will encourage a wide disparity in service quality, because basically they want bog standard PH regulation and to let the market do the rest.

So basically you'll get the cheap and cheerful (to put it as nicely as possible) at one end of the market, but the Addison Lee-style service at the other end charging higher prices, which to an extent largely exists already, especially in the bigger cities.

Equally, in smaller local market there's likely to be less variation in service because the market isn't big enough to support enough diversity in supply.

Having said all that, whatever the quality of service offered to the end user I'm not sure if it will be of much help to drivers.

The ph barons are big winners so far in this debate.

Councils and the people who work in the taxi licensing departments could be real losers, they may be looking for other employment soon.

These guys believe that the answer to everything is the free market, all I've read is make the service cheaper.

Out of town hackneys working in your area is going to be troublesome, yet nothing will be done about it.

Oh and they have a thing against high value plate holders..

By the way if I read it correctly 600,000 Australia dollars is worth £373,945.05, that is some plate value in Australia

Indeed, but less than New York.
