Taxi driver attacked and robbed and left by side of the road as assailants flee in his car

DETECTIVES are appealing for information after a Norfolk taxi driver was the victim of a robbery in Upwell.

The incident took place in the early hours of today after the victim picked up two men from the taxi rank outside the bingo hall in Wisbech.

The men asked to be taken to Upwell however on the way one claimed to be ill and as the taxi driver went to his aid the duo assaulted him, demanded cash and then drove off in his vehicle, a silver Vauxhall Vectra. The car was found abandoned close to Thomas Clarkson School in Corporation Road, Wisbech at around midday today.

The attack took place on the A1101 close to Upwell Village Hall.

A police spokesman said: “The victim walked towards the village hall after the incident where he was assisted by the driver of a white van who stopped to check he was okay.

“We are keen to speak to the driver of the van, who left the scene prior to emergency services arriving, as he may be able to provide vital information.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who may have spotted a man walking towards the village hall at shortly after midnight.”

The victim, aged in his 40s, sustained injuries to his face and ribs and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged.

Det Con Emma Cross, who is investigating the incident, said: “This was a nasty attack on a man who was merely trying to earn a living. As well as having to receive hospital treatment the victim has been left very shaken by what happened to him.

“We are very keen to speak to anyone who recognises the description of either male or who may have spotted the victim in the area after the attack or seen the vehicle in the vicinity of Wisbech today.”

One of the males was described as being around 5ft 11in tall, having tanned skin, being of slim build, aged 23 to 25 with dark brown short hair and was clean shaven. He wore dark tracksuit bottoms, a T-shirt and trainers.

The other male was described as being slightly shorter, with a paler complexion, of stocky build and aged in his early 20s. He had short blonde straight hair and was also clean shaven. He was wearing cropped jeans to around knee length and a multi-coloured top mainly white, orange and yellow in colour. Both males were believed to be Eastern European.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who believes they may recognise the description of either male or have any information relating to what happened.

Witnesses are asked to contact Det Con Emma Cross at King’s Lynn CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

CCTV would help identify the attackers, it would not have prevented the attack.

As soon as they see the stickers and camera it's a different ball game.

I had a wise guy last weekend who thought he could fight the world after some bravery water, he started getting into my personal space giving it the big one, that was until he noticed the CCTV footage of himself on the screen in the motor. He said "what's that there is it CCTV"? I replied "yes why"? His attitude changed within a second.

At the journeys end the fare was £11.00, he gave me £15.00 and told me to keep the change.

Agree^^
Had two scrotes get in, baseball caps and shell suits, going from one dodgy area to another dodgy area via a mates to 'pick some stuff up'. And you can tell somethings not right as soon as they get in, very quiet and mumbling to each other. Anyway when they saw the camera they both pulled their caps down and slumped low in the back seats.

After asking if it was a camera and me saying yes it captures everything they must have realised they'd have been filmed as they got in so trying to hide was too late. When we got to the first stop they both got out and one handed me a £20 saying we''ll be back in a few minutes. Without the cam I'm sure they'd have done one.

Or go out of their way to make it hard for drivers to get a proper system. Image

It's a massive deterrent.

But even if the attack still takes place, CCTV improves the chances of the scum getting caught and convicted.
