Taxi Firm Offsets Carbon Footprint

2nd September 2008

A taxi firm with offices in Hailsham says it will be carbon neutral by the end of this year.

Holiday Taxis, which specialises in airport transfers, says it will offset the emissions from its offices and give its customers the chance to do the same for their journeys.

The cost will vary according to the vehicle used for the transfer — which range from hybrid cars to helicopters — but will average 50p.

The company will also look to reduce emissions at its office in Hailsham, from where it operates the Where2Guv online taxi bookings service, and its headquarters in Burgess Hill, through recycling and improved energy efficiency.

The firm's chief executive Paul Stanyer said, "This project has taken almost 12 months, mostly taken up by a study into the carbon the business creates.

"By offering our customers the opportunity to offset their transfer-related carbon emissions at a very small cost, they are able to benefit from our service and at the same time contribute positively to the environment."

In a trial over the past month, Holiday Taxis said 40 per cent of its customers took up the offer.

The firm will now extend the scheme to bookings through agents and operators.

It will use the cash generated to purchase carbon credits from a range of projects that have been certified to offset at least the amount of emissions paid for. The first project being supported is a wind power scheme in China.

Every time I hear or see this 'Carbon neutral' tosh, I loose interest.

If the whole country shut down completely for a year, China would make up the emissions savings in a week.

You'll make them all mad you know....they are small people...and small people have very low tolerance thresholds.

Another option to allow the passengers to contribute to a Carbon neutral experience would be to Serve them Organic Unbaked beans whilst theyre in your Vehicle, then seal up all the windows and air vents and Capture all that Fart Generated methane and Pump it straight into the Engine Cylinder. the more they eat the further they get.

Only draw backs are the Availabiltity of willing drivers and secondly the danger of sudden Ignition of the methane within the passenger Compartment.

Tatra experimented with this Idea in the TATRA FARTA...

carbon neutral what is all this...... is this another ploy to get money out of people. The only true carbon neutral available is leg power which people may use if we charged the earth for an RTFC

Sorry to dissapoint you but walking is not carbon neutal. When you walk you breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. The harder or further you walk, the more oxygen you use and the more CO2 you make.
