Police investigate taxi shooting

A police investigation has been launched after a gun was fired at a taxi in Edinburgh.

The taxi was in Granton, at about 0135 BST on Monday, when the incident happened.

The taxi was in Royston Mains Road when a man is believed to have fired a shotgun at its rear, causing extensive damage. Nobody was hurt.

Police are in the process of carrying out forensic investigations and door-to-door inquiries at the scene.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "At this stage there is no indication as to the motivation behind this attack, although we are keeping an open mind in terms of our inquiries.

"Although he wasn't hurt, the taxi driver is understandably shaken as a result of his ordeal.

"We want anyone in the area who saw or heard anything suspicious in the early hours of this morning to get in touch with police as soon as possible.

"Similarly, anyone who has any other information that can help our enquiries should also contact us."

I think it could be a disgruntled punter as the fares have gone up again recently.
Joking aside the driver could have been killed or seriously injured

Private Hire Car Driver Mistook Shots For Fireworks

17th September 2008

The private hire driver whose car was blasted with a shotgun in Granton has described how he first mistook the bangs for fireworks, then spend off fearing further shots.

Craig Bolland, 36, was on his way to pick up a fare in Royston Mains Road in the early hours of Monday when he came under fire.

He said he had spotted someone hiding in bushes seconds before the shots rang out, it was reported today.

He said: "Maybe I got caught in a crossfire from someone else's battle. My first reaction was 'What the hell? Fireworks at this time of year?' Then I heard the pellets.

"I just put my foot down and got out of there as quickly as possible. This guy could have gone on a rampage."

Lothian and Borders Police said there was no indication of the motive for the attack. "We want anyone who saw or heard anything to get in touch as soon as possible," said a spokesman.
