Man held after 'taxi' driver shot in Handsworth

Brummie Mail!

A 'TAXI' driver was in hospital today after being shot yards from his firm’s office in Birmingham, sparking rush hour delays for drivers.

The 36-year-old victim was wounded in the incident that temporarily closed a major commuter route through Handsworth today.

Police found the victim at the junction of Waverhill Road and Soho Road after the alarm was raised at 7.10am.

The victim is believed to work as a private hire driver for Sky Cars but an employee working in the company’s office said there was no-one available to comment.

A police spokesman said he was taken to hospital for treatment for a single wound although his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A man was arrested in connection with the incident and taken into custody.

Detectives were today trying to determine a motive for the shooting but it is not thought to have been a robbery or gang-related.

A police spokesman said: “A motive is unknown at the moment.”

The spokesman added: “Police were called to Soho Road just before 7.10am today following reports of a shooting. A 36-year-old man was taken to hospital, although his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

“Another man was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.”

Soho Road was cordoned off between Thornhill Road and Grove Lane. Traffic diversions were in place for about 90 minutes.

This is the second shooting in the city in recent days.

*A 28-year-old Ladywood man suffered a broken leg after being shot in a betting shop in St Vincent Street West, Ladywood, on Tuesday.

It is believed a lone gunman walked into the Ladbrokes shop at about 6pm and fired two shots at him, hitting him once in the leg.

Detectives at Thornhill Road are investigating this latest shooting and appealed for witnesses to contact them on 0845 113 5000
