As a fully paid up member of the Metrocab owners society, having owned three over the last sixteen years, and having clocked up 750,000 miles over that time I would be interested to see, and very likely buy a £30k metrocab that does 100 mpg. Is there a waiting list?

I remain sceptical because Toyota and Honda hybrids cannot achieve anything like that economy, for all their R&D money.

Usually, I find that something that appears to be to good to be true, usually is.

But please do prove me to be wrong.

It does say up to 100 mpg? However I prefer the sound of the electric version, something which the chancellor can't tax on the excuse of pollution.

They do seem to be cutting it fine  never mind, I suppose skippy will still be test driving the imaginary metrocab in his imagination land.

What's so important about a 'turning circle' so long as the god damn thing turns who cares. Apart from which it might stop the HC just turning at will without any regards to other drivers on the road

exactly - as Boris answered on Top Gear when asked where does the power come from? "the plug"

That means burning of fossil fuels in most cases. They will find a way!

A turning circle is vital on the public highway, particularly on roundabouts, where you would be stuck on the island without one.

That's not very gallant, Jimbo!!

In answer to your query, Toots, London's Public Carriage Office require hackney carriages to have a small turning circle in order that they may effect U-turns in normal streets. That ability does not exist in standard saloon cars.

A few specialist companies were building vehicles to meet the specification. This makes the vehicles very expensive because of the limited supply.

By removing the turning circle requirement, more companies would be able to enter the London market so reducing the capital cost of acquiring the vehicle.

No doubt others will give you some figures and a more detailed rationale but that, in essence, outlines the situation for you.

Which makes it so strange that only the PCO, and a few dinosaur councils up north, are the only authorities in the whole wide world that insist on it. :?

You probably have to look at the historical reason for it being introduced.

I don't know that reason but, I would surmise that the ability to complete a tight U-turn would benefit the customer rather than proceeding to the next convenient junction in a traffic jam.

Do we have any historians of the London Cab on board?
