Help needed to catch unscrupulous drivers


COUNCIL officers are calling for revellers’ help after claims that some taxi drivers were turning off their meters to rake in as much as possible over the Christmas period.

The council’s licensing department has received a number of complaints about some taxi drivers turning off their meters, setting the price or throwing revellers out of their cabs because they refused to pay.

It is illegal for any taxi driver, unless they are privately hired, to set a price and the council want people who underwent this type of treatment over the Christmas period to get in touch.

Malcolm Burton, licensing manager at Charnwood Borough Council, said: “These complaints are coming from within the trade – that a small minority of drivers have been turning the meter off or setting a price and saying ‘take it or leave it.’

“This is reflecting badly on taxi drivers because of a couple of mavericks out there who have decided to charge what they want and play fast and loose with council regulations.”

The licensing authority want to gather as much evidence as possible from the general public to determine how big or small the problem might be.

Mr Burton added: “It is people stumbling out of the pub that become potential victims of these maverick, rogue taxi drivers. At the moment, we can’t identify them unless we have evidence. These people will continue to do this until they get caught out.”
