Taxi rank fury over tariffs

TAXI drivers have accused North Devon Council of not listening to their views on new fares.

The council's licensing committee is due to discuss revised tariffs at its meeting next Tuesday.

But there is anger among the drivers that their suggested fares have been ignored and particular concern that the tariff for multi-seat vehicles has been effectively decreased.

Gay Lushington-Murray, secretary of the North Devon Taxi and Private Hire Association has written saying: "We have told you in writing what we want, we have attended various meetings and you purposely make sure the items on the agenda the drivers wish to discuss are left until about two hours into the meeting so that all drivers have had to leave to get back to their taxis.

"Is this why there is no funding towards in-car cameras out of all the money we pay the council? Is it just wasted on unnecessary wages?

"We will not accept a decrease in the tariffs for multi-seaters as you suggest. Why don't you take a decrease in your salary so that we can have the added safety of in-car cameras?"

Other drivers have written complaining that there are too many taxis in Barnstaple and that this has led to undercutting on fares.

The committee will make fare recommendations to the Executive.
