Women warned to only use licensed Southampton taxis after sex assault

TAXI drivers in Southampton are warning women to use white hackney carriage vehicles after a female was sexually assaulted when she got into a car.

Police are hunting the driver who attacked the passenger after she jumped into his car to get a lift home. As the hunt to establish who the driver was and which company he worked for goes on, cabbies are urging passengers to only get into licensed hackney carriages.

Taxi driver and union chairman Perry McMillan said: “Women need to know that they shouldn’t get into a car unless it is a licensed taxi. “The only cars you can flag down are the white hackney carriage vehicles.

These are the only ones allowed to be flagged down so this case was actually an illegal pick-up by someone.” “Whatever taxi you are getting into you should be able to see the taxi licence on the back of the car and inside in the top left hand side of the windscreen.”

Ian Hall, of the Southampton Hackney Association, also urged passengers to use the white taxis and check to see if a driver has a valid licence. “They should also make sure they can see the driver’s licence which all drivers know they have to keep visible,” he added. Detectives say the assault happened late at night after the woman flagged down the taxi close to the White House pub in Above Bar.

The car first had a male passenger in the front who shared the journey until he got out in Shirley High Street. The woman told police she then got into the front seat and the driver sexually assaulted her for up to 15 minutes until he stopped to let her out.

Police are now appealing for the male passenger, described as stocky, aged 35 to 40, with a shaven head to come forward. The taxi driver is said to have been Asian and had a beard.

Are you thinking what Iam thinking, why did she get into the front? & for 15 minutes whilst driving. The driver must be an extreamly skilled driver to do all that or she is telling porkies.

On a more serious note, I've had lots of passengers that will get out of the back seat and into the front seat once somebody gets out. I however don't understand why a woman would do this is sends mixed signals to people, not that I would suggest this is an excuse to sexually assault anybody, if indeed that is what happened

he was asian, and probably muslim, and we know they wouldnt offend against a woman because thier religion says they cant, so there
