Taxi Driver Charged With £300,000 Robbery On Southport Jewellers

Aug 29 2009

A taxi driver has appeared in court accused of being involved in £300,000-plus raid on a jewellers.

Paul Collings, a 39, of Sunbeam Road, Old Swan, is allegedly the driver for the gang which cleared out a window full of gold and gems from Southport jewellers Collingwood Gold.

A gang robbed the shop in Tulketh Street on August 18 escaping in a lilac blue BMW.

Collings yesterday faced North Sefton magistrates charged with robbery.

He spoke only to confirm his name, age and address. He was remanded in custody until December 1 when he is due to appear at Liverpool crown court.

Nobody else has as yet been arrested in connection with the robbery and Detective Chief Inspector Nikki Holland today issued a fresh appeal for information.

She said: “There are four men that we would like to speak to in connection with this case.

“The large quantity of jewellery taken which is worth over £300,000 is still missing.

“On that day we believe that the offenders may have travelled from the Huyton area to Southport in a yellow taxi.

“We are appealing to people who may know who these four gentlemen are, as they may have used the taxi on other occasions and in other areas as well.”

Anyone with any information about the raid should call Sefton CID on 0151 777 3110 or alternatively ring anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Don't think he'll be getting his badge when it's up for renewal.
