A Bogus taxi driver who picked up three women in Hanley city centre despite being banned from driving will be sentenced by a Crown Court judge. Disqualified driver Mohammed Ghafoor used his brother's Ford Mondeo and a metallic taxi plate to pick up the women on January 9.

Magistrates heard how police followed Ghafoor from Trinity Street, in Hanley and spoke to him when he stopped the car in nearby Etruria Vale Road. But Ghafoor, who had a knife, drove off and he was later found hiding in the loft of his home in Etruria Vale Road.

Ghafoor, aged 32, admitted disqualified driving, having no insurance, using a vehicle as a private hire car without a licence, dangerous driving and possessing a rigid knife. He also admitted driving while disqualified and having no insurance on December 17.

Chairman of the bench, Sheila Armstrong, told Ghafoor: "We have considered the dangerous driving carefully. We note you were pretending to be a private hire driver and you picked up passengers who pleaded with you to stop when the police were following you. We are concerned you put the lives of your passengers and other road users at risk."

Ghafoor was remanded in custody until his sentence on January 31. Diane Shackson, defending, said her client knew he faced a prison sentence.

So was he driving his brothers plated PH car or was it a private car with a pretend taxi plate?

either way he ought to go away for a while, but my thoughts are that he will be out again by easter,
