Faults found in majority of Selby taxis

Police conducting a check on the roadworthiness of taxis in Selby found 19 out of 21 vehicles had defects.

Three of the taxis were ordered off the road immediately in the four-hour operation on Friday, though two were later fixed and allowed to continue.

Two others were given seven days to rectify problems and inspectors found 12 more cars would have failed an MOT.

Officers said they were "disappointed" with the number of faults found.

During the operation one driver was caught speeding and three fixed penalty notices were issued for other minor offences.

Results 'compared favourably'

Road Policing Officer, TC David Hunter, said: "Members of the public have a right to expect that the taxis they use are safe and roadworthy and that the drivers are properly licensed.

"While many taxi drivers do maintain their vehicles, I am disappointed by the number of vehicles which presented defects, whether minor or more serious."

Tim Grogan, Licensing Enforcement Officer for Selby District Council, said the results compared favourably with other areas.

He added: "Though I am disappointed that five of the 21 vehicles examined were issued with prohibition notices, I am relieved that only one was removed immediately from the road.

"Though not complacent, I am satisfied that over 75% of those cars and vans inspected either had no issues or were served with advisory notices, which is a testament to the licensed operators and to the excellent service provided by Reynolds, who maintain the council's licensed fleet of vehicles."
