Well Toots not squared, do you feel the need for training / education / assessment / examination or indeed any other form of gaining or proving knowledge?

I for one do not feel the need.

I do object to any Institution of Government deciding that such training is mandated.

The biggest joke of all is that when these crazy schemes get mooted because "It's needed" the Cab Driver keeps working though he / she is now surely "unsafe" because the course / examination / attendance or whatever is outstanding.

If ANY of these things are that vital - why is the driver not immediately suspended until they are achieved? The answer is of course they are all (and this is cockney rhyming slang) Orchestra Halls!

(When do I get the wobblies?).

I do agree with you but I still think drivers would benefit from education.

The wobblies is on the way at a guess within the month

I had to do the DSA test back in December to get my badge. I'm 56 with over 35 years driving experience and a good driving record. I confess I cannot remember being so nervous for a long time as when I did the test. I concluded it was a fear of being judged poor at something I considered myself competent at.

I did pass, but actually only just! I do think it was my nerves. Do I think the DSA test is a good idea? Now having done it and being a user of taxis from time to time with my wife and son, yes! It alerted me to driving techniques and made me think more what i am doing when I am behind the wheel, both driving the PH and private motoring.

I know this doesn't get around the issue of existing badge holder though.

New assessments for Chichester taxi drivers
dsa test is it just for new drivers, or does it include existing drivers
Would-be taxi drivers wanting to work in the area covered by Chichester District Council are now being assessed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) before being given a licence to drive a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle.

More than 160 councils throughout Britain have already agreed to take testing on board for hackney carriage and private hire drivers. Central operations change manager Phil Coop said: “We are delighted Chichester District Council (CDC) has decided to introduce this assessment as driving a taxi carries a great deal of responsibility.”

Specially-trained driving examiners assess the ability of applicants to drive safely and professionally in a ‘real’ environment. The test includes manoeuvres designed specifically with the operational taxi driver in mind and is set at a higher standard than the practical test for learner drivers.

The assessment ensures the competence of the applicant to drive passengers in safety and comfort. Those who are successful receive a certificate of competence. Taxi assessments became available at test centres at Chichester, Portsmouth, Gosport and Worthing on April 1.

Taxi drivers are the only people to carry passengers for money who do not have to take statutory vocational tests. Laurence Foord, principle licensing officer, said: “CDC is fully committed to improving road safety at all levels and the opportunity to participate in the DSA Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Driver Assessment Scheme was seen as an excellent way to ensure that drivers licensed by this council are of a consistently high standard”.

Chichester are only requiring it for new entrants.
