Thugs jailed for trying to hijack taxi driver's cab

Two men have been sent to jail for beating up a Swadlincote taxi driver, stealing his takings and trying to hijack his cab.
Dean Croft, 22, and Craig Twigger, 21, from Woodville, were picked up by the cabbie at Toll Gate in Woodville, and asked to be taken to Chestnut Avenue in Midway.
The 40-year-old driver, who works for Alpha Cars in High Street, pulled up at the address and was then subject to a serious assault.
The thugs threw punches, hitting his face, which left him with cuts and swelling around his eye.
The thieves then stole a bag of food which belonged to the driver and hit him around his head with it several times.
His takings were also snatched during the attack and the thieves tried to drag him out of his cab to steal the vehicle.
Derbyshire Police said at the time of the incident, which happened on October 9 last year, that ‘luckily’ the driver managed to lock himself in his vehicle and drive off when they attempted to steal the taxi.
The cabbie called police and a manhunt was launched for the attackers. Croft and Twigger were later identified as suspects and arrested.
The taxi driver was taken to accident and emergency by ambulance at Burton’s Queen’s Hospital to be treated for his facial injuries.
Both Croft and Twigger pleaded guilty to robbery at Derby Crown Court and were sentenced to 27 months in prison.
A spokesman for the Taxi Association said: “This is a good result and an example that assaults of licensed drivers will not be tolerated."
“Anyone who attacks a taxi driver should be dealt with. Luckily in this case justice has been served.”
