Plea for more taxi ranks in Rhyl

June 6 2011

Taxi owners in Rhyl look likely to lose their fight for more ranks to be provided in the town.

In a report to this Wednesday’s meeting of Denbighshire’s licensing committee officers say that a review carried out over 16 days in March and May showed that the total number of vehicles was decreasing.

A rise in the number of hackney carriage licences was counter-balanced by a drop in private hire vehicles. During 144 inspections in the 16 days the four ranks in Water Street, Bodfor Street, High Street and the railway station, were full to capacity only four times.

The popularity of the High Street rank, which has just four spaces, is causing problems, however.

With more customers available, turnover is high, which leads to some drivers queuing up outside the designated area, causing congestion and annoying other drivers who do move to find spaces on other ranks.

Despite the operators’ pleas officers say that more spaces could not be justified.

Chris Smith, acting chair of Denbighshire’s Licensed Taxi Trade Association said: “The council has sold 246 taxi licences and provided ranks spaces for 69 taxis, throughout the whole of Denbighshire.”
