Scarborough taxi drivers caught on camera

Taxi drivers in a North Yorkshire town could soon be filmed on their journeys thanks to CCTV in their cars.

Scarborough Borough Council’s licensing committee is set to review a new policy requested by drivers in an attempt to protect them from attacks from passengers.

It sets out strict conditions for the use of CCTV in Hackney carriage vehicles and private hire transport and states all cameras must store footage which only the council and the police will be able to see.

The cameras will cost drivers about £550 to install and the council’s licensing committee has been recommended to approve the policy.

there is no safe system of cctv, only police/council access to cctv footage, there is software on the internet to crack any system

If it stops drivers being killed, then I would say they are all safe.

A £5 dummy camera then would do the deterrent job just as well.

A £350 camera would also do the job just as well.

The chosen for us cameras have facility to spy on the drivers lifestyle, this is against basic human rights.

Why then are the trade forced to buy from chosen suppliers at extorted prices just to satisfy council snooping?

The council don't have automatic access to the content of the system. the only time that the system would be viewed would be following an incident. This would be instigated by either the driver or a passenger who has a complaint.

If there is to be no access to images by the driver (who coincidently has paid through the nose for the thing) then on a driver complaining, if police or council cannot be asked they will have the same response as with the street cameras, not working, wrong angles wrong light...etc etc.

Be sure all will be working 100% if its the driver in the frame.

As Skull said, we have no rights, we are manipulated and abused on the whims of our regulators. This is just another nail in the coffin under the guise of driver protection.

The same control room that never sees the thug that kicks your Taxi and causes £300 worth of damage?

My point here was that the cost of the cameras is sky high to ensure they are turned on all the time and cannot be tampered...and its us that have to pay for it when there are equally capable systems around at a fraction of the cost. We are treated as automatically criminal and have to pay the price ourselves. I am quite certain that any driver complaint will not have the same dedication to follow up as a complaint against the driver by malicious punters.
