No jail for teen taxi attacker
Published on 15 February 2005

AN unemployed girl who took part in a frenzied attack on a city cabbie has walked free from court - and been told to get herself a job.

Jobless Jennifer Knight, 18, who joined in after a friend set about the taxi driver as he turned up to pick up a fare outside Cambridge's YMCA, was told she was lucky not to be locked up for her behaviour.

City magistrates branded Knight's actions "disgusting" and told her it was time she went out and got herself a job instead of getting drunk and into trouble.

Knight, who was living on benefits at the YMCA, Gonville Place, Petersfield, at the time of the incident last August but has now moved to Victoria Terrace, Cambourne, was ordered to do 40 hours community service, pay cabbie Artois Duarte £230 compensation and pay £50 costs.

She had denied being involved in the attack with friend Clare Smith but was convicted of affray and assault after a trial last month.

The court had accepted Smith, aged 19, had started and played the major role in the crazed attack - for no other reason than she was out of her mind on alcohol - but that Knight also then "got stuck in".

Mr Duarte, who was left shocked and injured, had his mobile stolen by a third woman as he was kicked and punched before he managed to make his getaway and call police.

Smith was arrested at the scene and Knight was traced after police called Mr Duarte's phone and she answered.

Knight was put on probation for a similar, unprovoked and drunken street attack on a girl in the city centre just days before the incident involving the cabbie, the court learned.

The magistrates told Knight she had been saved from more serious punishment by a probation report outlining progress in addressing her problems and which showed she had "turned a corner" since the violence.

Magistrates heard Knight had a difficult childhood and had fallen into drink and substance misuse.

But they were told she has now disassociated herself from the people she had been spending time with, has moved to a different address and is alcohol and drug free.

Smith pleaded guilty to violence charges at an earlier hearing and was put on probation for nine months and also ordered to pay the cabbie £230.

Dont know about another site for Taxis, I am starting to think these sites can be dangerous, a totally uncensored one does not bear thinking about, probably end in a murder or something.

So on a thread concerning an attack on a driver, some think it's fun to have a little chit chat about who's who. [-(

I think Jim would fit in here quite nicely.

He thinks those that currently pretend to represent him are useless, and can see a time without quotas.

I think he's posted once or twice in the past, but hasn't stayed long.
