Middlesbrough taxi driver killed in early morning crash






A MAN died in the early hours of this morning after the taxi he was driving hit a tree and parked cars on a Middlesbrough road.

Family man Mohammed Latif, 46, from Middlesbrough, suffered serious head injuries after the Vauxhall Vectra private hire vehicle crashed on Park Vale Road at about 2.20am.

Mr Latif was taken to James Cook University Hospital but died as a result of his injuries.

Victoria Road was closed for a while after the accident close to Croydon Road in Middlesbrough.

Croydon Road runs parallel to Park Vale Road, the quiet residential scene of the accident, and Victoria Road is also close to the scene. Traffic was being diverted via Angle Street early today.

All roads have been reopened.

At the scene today a road speed sign was laid out on a grass verge that appeared to have been knocked down.

Residents on Croydon Road said the crash immediately looked serious.

Mum-of-three Haleema Hassin, 26, said she was in bed when she heard a loud bang.

“At first I thought the tree had fallen down on top of my car. Then I looked out of the window and saw the car had crashed and the bonnet was broken.

“I couldn’t believe it, it looked really, really bad - I have never seen anything like it.

“The police, ambulance and fire brigade came straight away and the road was closed off.”

Rizwan Akhtar, 26, a shop manager from Croydon Road, said: “I was at a friend’s house when I got a phone call saying there was police and ambulance outside my house.

“When I got back you could see straight away that it was serious.”

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the fatal crash. Any witnesses should call PC Martin Tranmer of Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit on 01642 326326, quoting event number U206066.

Unless he had a seizure or a heart attack or anything along those lines it suggests he was hammering through a 20 mph zone.

Condolences to his family and friends, but if he was footing it through a 20 then I guess he only has himself to blame.

I was thinking the same, doing 20mph doesn't do that amount of damage.

One of my mates rang me to tell me that one of his drivers had rung to say she was not feeling well and probably couldn't work the next day. This was at 5.00 PM. She had rung the doctor who was going to come out at 7.30 PM. When he arrived, she was already dead. Suspected heart attack. RIP Diane.

Can't say I've seen many taxi drivers respecting 20 mph limits at 2am, although the nature of the accident suggests he would have been doing a bit more, unless as you say the crash was caused by illness.

Couldn't really see a heart attack coming on so suddenly as to cause such a scenario, although if his heart stopped beating (cardiac arrest) for other reason then he could have lost consciousness fairly suddenly.

A stroke at the wheel could also cause a drive to pass out, but again it seems unlikely that there wouldn't be some sort of warning.

Or he could be a diabetic and his blood sugar hit the floor, causing him to pass out. Again it's unlikely that this could happen without warning, but some diabetics become immune to the signs of a 'hypo', or could just ignore the symptoms.

But since the article suggests he died from the results of his injuries then this might rule out the heart attack/stroke scenario.

Perhaps he had an epileptic fit, this could cause his foot to go hard down on the pedal and he'd have no chance of steering out of it.

With regard to other comments about driver health, we are in pressure cooker times and I've been there myself before, this does lead to unexpected heart attacks,strokes etc, we all deal with it differently and some will worry and bottle things up, now I'm not saying I'm immune cos I have enough on my plate still but I do also have a weapon against it, I work the rule of if it isn't there you can't have it, I don't decide I'm not paying, the capatalist's do that for me, and as they are greed to the core I see no reason why I should sweat one on their behalf, so next time you are sitting there without a job for 2 hours instead of beating yourself up, say to yourself IDGAF and in some cases simply giving an empty coke can a good kicking is excellent relief from the frustration, try it, and also tell the guy who annoys you why he annoys you, don't spare his feelings you don't owe him anything.

Family pay tribute to taxi driver crash victim Mohammed Latif



THE family of a taxi driver who died in a crash have paid tribute to the “caring, devoted” father.

Popular Mohammed Latif, known as Latty, suffered serious head injuries when his Vauxhall Vectra private hire cab hit a tree and parked cars on Park Vale Road, in Middlesbrough, at about 2.20am yesterday.

Mr Latif was taken to James Cook University Hospital by ambulance but died as a result of his injuries.

In a statement, his family said the 46-year-old would be missed by everyone who knew him.

“Mohammed, known as Latty, was a hard-working man,” they said. “He had a heart of gold and would help everyone he could, giving them great support.

“Latty was a caring, devoted father to his three children and a rock to his wife, Tarzeem.

“He was well liked and loved by all who knew him and will be sadly missed.”

An inquest has opened into Mr Latif’s death. Teesside Coroner’s Court heard that the dad-of-three, who was born in Pakistan, lived with wife Tarzeem, 41, at their family home on Chalford Oaks, Acklam.

Evidence of identification was given by brother-in-law Sirfraz Ahmed, 38, a project manager from Hartlepool.

The hearing was adjourned by Teesside Coroner Michael Sheffield for further inquiries.

Sadly he had a heart attack, most of the drivers in the Boro knew him as a good hardworking familyman, a genuine guy, who was a gentleman. He will be missed by not only his family but all of the taxi trade in the Boro, be it PH or hacks.

Hope the chap rests in peace.
