Attack cabbie is in court

A former taxi driver is due to appear before a court for sentencing in connection with a sexual assault on a passenger.

Zulfikar Ahmad Nawaz, 56, of Balshaw Road, Leyland, is due to appear at Preston Crown Court next month.

Nawaz was working as a taxi driver in the county on December 5 when he refused to stop his taxi outside the home address of his teenage male victim.

He took the victim to a secluded dirt-track in Heskin, near Chorley, where he locked him in the car and sexually assaulted him.

Dad-of-four Nawaz picked his victim and a friend up from a taxi rank outside the Henry Tate pub in Chorley, dropping off the friend before the assault was carried out.

He is currently on bail and is due to return to court on Monday, November 7 to be sentenced.

Taxi driver jailed for sexual assault

A LEYLAND man has been jailed for sexually assaulting a teenager in Chorley.

Zulfikar Ahmad Nawaz, 56, of Balshaw Road, Leyland appeared at Preston Crown Court today (Friday 11 November) where he was sentenced.

He was sentenced to five years in prison with a five-year extended licence period. He will be on the sex offenders’ register for life and is subject to a 10-year sex offences prevention order (SOPO), which will prohibit him from driving any passenger carrying vehicle during this period.

Nawaz was convicted of sexual assault on Friday 7 October after a two-week trial.

He was working as a taxi driver at around 3am on 5 December 2010 when he refused to stop his taxi outside the home address of his teenage male victim. He took the victim to a secluded dirt-track near Chorley and sexually assaulted him.

The victim pushed Nawaz away and managed to run off. Nawaz was arrested on the same day.

Det Sgt Phil Bowerbank said: “Fortunately these sorts of offences are very rare but I hope this provides some reassurance to the local community that this man is now behind bars.

“I am pleased with the sentence given which reflects the nature of the offence. I hope this outcome will now help the victim to put the incident behind him and move on with his life.

“We are committed to investigating offences of this nature and we will continue to put offenders before the courts.”
